Characteristic Tikhon's fate was determined from childhood. The life of a serf among strangers is hard and unsightly. Tishka constantly has to do all the master's errands in addition to minor work. He was irritated by the complete lack of freedom. There was no time to even hang out with friends. Often, talking to himself, he complained that the masters drove him mercilessly. He was tired as a dog. Everyone and their dog pushed him around. His head ached from the endless slaps on the back of the head that his masters gave him with particular pleasure, sometimes not calculating the force of the blow and forgetting that he was still very little. The poor boy had no choice but to endure such treatment, because sometimes, having completed a task, he received something from the master's shoulder as a reward. Tishka had a good trait – thriftiness. He carefully put the penny he earned aside, knowing exactly how to distribute the profit he received, without going beyond the limits and without giving in to various kinds of temptations. He divided the accumulated funds into parts. He could spend one on goodies, borrow the second at low interest rates, and hide the third, waiting for the right moment when it might come in handy. Despite his young age, he knew how to stand up for himself. He would easily be cheeky to his elders or show a rude disposition in conversations. Most likely, he learned his bad manners from his owners, trying on himself in their place. Like most children, he loved to fantasize in his spare time. But his dreams were far from childish. He often imagined how he would grow up and prove to everyone who bullied him what he had become. There was no doubt that the ambitious boy would achieve his goals. He had the makings. He showed his true colors when Rispolozhensky came to Podkhalyuzin demanding that he return the money. Tishka takes a direct part in the dispute between the adults, letting the clerk know that he is in league with him, showing himself not as an ordinary servant.
