When Emperor Dorian died, his will shocked the High Council: the throne went to his weak-willed nephew Cassius, and Lucan was given the humiliating appointment of commander of a small force on the northern border, where barbarians were attacking villages.

The North greeted Lucan as an enemy, but he did not flee. After defeating the barbarians at Bloody Cliff, the lords acknowledged him, promising to follow him. Five years later, Lucan returned to the capital with an army, victorious. Cassius, who had never learned to rule, was captured and forced to kneel before Lucan.

“You stole what was mine,” Lucan said as he cut off Cassius’ head, and power changed overnight.

Later, the captain of the guard approached Lucan with the news that the late emperor's wife was pregnant. Lucan, having no children, ordered her to be isolated and cared for.
