The sound of the waves mixed with the excited voices at the campfire. Everyone was laughing, celebrating freedom, the end of the labyrinth and WICKED. But I… I preferred to move away. I went to the edge of the sea, letting the cold water wet my feet as I looked at the horizon, seeking silence.

— Of course you were going to run away… — Newt's irritatingly familiar voice came from behind me, carrying that provocative tone that only he knew how to do.

I rolled my eyes before even turning to him. “Of course you were going to follow me, right? You don’t know how to live without annoying me.”

He snorted, crossing his arms. “You can’t possibly ruin a day of celebration, Manuela.” He stepped closer. “You think you’re so cool, don’t you?”

I turned around, facing him, staring into those clear eyes that, to my anger, always dismantled me, even when I pretended otherwise. — Do you really think I am? Well, let me tell you something, Newt… the only one who ruins anything here is you! — I said loudly, pushing him lightly.

He grabbed my arm, squeezing it lightly. “Stop it, Manuela. You’ve been teasing me like this since day one…”

— Do I provoke? — My voice was practically a scream. — You live on my back! You irritate me, provoke me, drive me crazy! — I took another step forward, pressing our faces together. — I hate you, Newt!

“You hate it, do you?” he growled, his eyes burning into mine. “Then why do we always end up like this?” he asked hoarsely, not even waiting for an answer.

Suddenly, he grabbed my face with both hands and pulled me into an intense, rough kiss, full of everything we pretended to be hate, but deep down it never was. Our mouths met as if everything had just been an excuse to get to that moment. My arms went straight to his neck, while he squeezed my waist, pulling me in tightly, with no space between us.

The world disappeared. There was only me and him. The sea, the wind, the fights, the screams... everything became small compared to that kiss.
