Cross and Dream

Dream crept along the wall, trying not to wake his brother. Moonlight seeped through the loosely drawn curtains, drawing stripes on the floor. The backpack with his things painfully dug into his back, but Dream endured. He hadn't seen Cross for a month, since Nightmare had made another scandal, blaming Cross for all of Dream's troubles. Stupid, of course.

His heart was pounding as he opened the window and jumped out. The soft ground took his fall, and Dream, catching his breath, ran towards the forest. It was a long way to Cross's house, and he had to walk, but the thought of meeting his beloved gave him strength.

The forest greeted him with silence and coolness. The trees stretched their gnarled branches to the sky, as if trying to grab the stars. Dream quickened his pace, feeling the fear of being caught on his skin. Nightmare was unpredictable and cruel when it came to his "protection" of his brother.

Finally, Cross's house appeared through the trees. Small, cozy, with warm light in the windows. Dream felt a lump rise in his throat. He stood and watched, not daring to knock. What if Cross had changed his mind? What if Nightmare was already here?

But the desire to see Cross, to touch him, to hear his voice overcame his fear. Dream took a deep breath and knocked on the door. His heart sank in anticipation.
