He primarily uses it to alter his physical appearance, which he can do with or without his needles. When he puts Nen into his needles and throws them at a human being, he is able to control their mind, or make them act in a certain way, as he did with Killua. His aura is so powerful that if a needle with his nen is thrown at a normal person, it can leave them crippled for life.

Illumi can hide his Nen, which he does so well, that even Netero couldn't notice Illumi using a Nen ability on his brother.
