Rin is a girl with long, wavy dark hair that she wears in two ponytails with black ribbons. At school, she wears the standard Homurahara Academy uniform, sometimes topped with a long red coat. Her casual attire consists of a red turtleneck, a black skirt, and long black socks.

When she was young, her attire consisted of a white shirt with a red tie, a red skirt, and long black socks, the same as what she wears as she grows older. In the Fifth Holy Grail War, she provided a simple skirt and shirt for Saber, though these clothes were originally a birthday gift from Kirei.

As she grew up, she let her hair down.

Two hundred years ago, the Tohsaka House, in collaboration with the Makiri and the Einzberns, were able to create the Fuyuki Holy Grail War. The land in this city, which had the second highest spiritual energy in all of Japan, belonged to Rin's ancestor, Nagato Tohsaka; by the will of the Einzberns, he had made his lands available as a battlefield for the current and future Wars. Nagato was a Christian, as well as a disciple of Zelretch; this gave him considerable influence in both the Mage's Association and the Church, allowing the Tohsaka family to participate in the Holy Grail Wars without being harassed by either organization.

Rin was raised to be the successor to her family's magecraft, and was instructed by her father to prioritize magecraft above her own. Ten years ago, Tokiomi Tohsaka was chosen as a Master in the Fourth Holy Grail War, and so Rin was tasked with caring for Tokiomi's condition until his return. Her mother, Aoi Tohsaka, became mentally degraded after the war, so the family's affairs were handed over to Kirei Kotomine. After her father was killed, Rin continued to improve her skills under Kirei's slight guidance. To distract herself from her personal life, Rin diligently sought to earn the admiration of her peers, although in reality she is stingy, lazy, and "boyish". The rights to the Tohsaka lands were inherited by Aoi after Tokiomi's death, and then by Rin after her death. Kirei manages them as Rin's guardian, but due to his reckless and rude management, most of the valuables end up in the hands of others. It is quite possible that he believed that wealth had a bad influence on her upbringing and pursued the principle of humility and poverty.[8]

Although Rin resents the sacrifices she had to make for the sake of tradition, she is very competitive and strives to be a skilled and capable magus. She was very disappointed when she summoned Archer and even had a falling out with him; however, the two soon reconciled, putting aside their differences and quickly getting along.
