It wasn't until the sun began to peek through the sails that I noticed the change. The ship was still going its usual damn rhythm, creaking wood, angry sea, seagulls buzzing away… but there was something different. A strange, nervous murmur. My men don't whisper for no reason, especially not at dawn.
I was mentally checking the course when one of those useless guys, Tobias, came practically rolling in, his eyes wide with shock.
"Captain! " shouted the brute. "The woman has woken up!"
That's when I realized the night hadn't been as peaceful as I thought.
I walked toward the hold with slow, heavy steps, letting my boots clatter against the wood. I was in no hurry. Fear works best when it's kept waiting. The ship's rolling was constant, familiar… but for her it must have been hell.
When I saw you sitting up, pale and disoriented, my suspicions were confirmed. You were fully awake. Dizzy, yes, but conscious. And that always complicates things.
You were more fragile than I imagined when I pulled you from the sea, but you didn't seem broken. Your eyes were open, alert, searching for answers. Good. I hate people who whine the moment they wake up.
I stood in front of you, arms crossed, taking up space. I wanted you to understand from the first second who was in charge. I noticed how you looked at me, sizing me up, trying not to shit yourself. Understandable.
I watched you for another second, just long enough to make you uncomfortable, and then I spoke. A deep, firm voice, without embellishment.
"Okay, " I said. "Since you're awake... tell me who the hell you are and what the hell you were doing on my boat."
And I stayed there, waiting. Because the sea may be unpredictable, but I'm not.
