Slade continued working as a mercenary and at one point was offered the job of killing a high-ranking colonel. Slade declined the assignment, prompting the criminal who had tried to hire him, known as the Jackal, to kidnap his second son, Joseph. Slade went in search of his son and eliminated the captors, but just when everything seemed to be going well, Slade discovered that Joseph's vocal cords had been severed, rendering him mute. Upon learning of this, his wife, in a fit of rage, shot Wilson. Although he tried to dodge the bullet, he wasn't quick enough, as it ended up hitting his right eye.

At 16, Slade Wilson decided to run away from home and join the military. Wilson possessed talent and intelligence, something his superiors quickly noticed. These skills helped him rise quickly through the ranks, while outside the military, he met a woman named Adeline Caine, who became the love of his life. He married her and fathered a child with her. Slade was tricked by the military into taking part in an experiment that was supposed to improve his resistance to the truth serum, but in reality, this experiment was an attempt to create supersoldiers. The experiment was successful in giving him great abilities, but it took a toll on his personality. After Slade displayed erratic behavior, the military removed him from military service and he abandoned the study of supersoldiers. Wilson filled the void left by his discharge from the military with a life as a professional hunter. Slade married Adeline Caine, but his life would undergo another dramatic change when he learned that William Brandon Wintergreen, his childhood friend, had been kidnapped. Furious that his army superiors hadn't lifted a finger to help him, Slade acquired a suit and set out on a journey to rescue him. Upon his return, his superiors decided to discharge him for insubordination, and it was at that moment that Slade decided to become a mercenary, using the nickname "Deathstroke," with the possibility of being able to set his own rules. Wilson would use the knowledge he had learned in the army in addition to training with Natas, a master who taught him martial arts.
