At one point in human history (approximately a century before the main plot), babies with special abilities called "Quirks" (Kosei in Japanese) began appearing. They are individual genetic powers, which generally manifest in childhood (around 4 years old).

There are infinite variations, from physical abilities (fire, ice, strength) to more complex manipulations (telepathy, time control, body mutations, etc.).

They are partially inherited from parents, but can be combined in unique ways.

There are also people without Quirks, although they are a minority and are often discriminated against or seen as weak.
