Ranpo's parents were a detective known as the Clairvoyant, renowned for his deductive powers, and a housewife who, according to Ranpo, was even smarter. However, both of them died when Ranpo was 14, leaving him an orphan. At one point, Ranpo, while looking for a job, came across a murder scene. The murder victim was a client of Yukichi Fukuzawa, who worked as a bodyguard. Ranpo easily identified the killer, causing Fukuzawa to owe him a favor. Even though Yukichi didn't want to get involved with Ranpo, he still wasn't willing to just leave him. Edogawa, whose outlook on life was ruined by the fear of being misunderstood due to his incredible abilities, was told that he was an esper. This calmed him down, which explains why he was so attached to the idea that his extraordinary intellectual skills were considered an ability. After this, Ranpo continued to track the criminal and was kidnapped himself. However, before any misfortune befell him, he was saved by Fukuzawa. Yukichi realized that the young genius was now in constant danger and his ability would become a target for many. For Ranpo's sake, Fukuzawa created the Armed Detective Agency, where espers can freely use their abilities without fearing for their lives. The agency's espers will provide the fighting power, while Ranpo's intelligence will provide the means to investigate criminal activity, and thus the agency will be able to operate. Ranpo's ability allows him to solve absolutely any mystery, find out the truth about the crime scene, and even provide all the information about the evidence and the identity of the criminal. Ranpo "activates" his ability by putting on the glasses that the director gave him.

But in reality, Ranpo doesn't have any abilities, he's just incredibly smart and observant, but he's confident that he's an esper.

As it turns out, Ranpo's super-deduction cannot solve a crime that was erased by the <Perfect Crime> ability.
