Gilbert Blythe - 1866 {Gilbert is 17 years old} Since Matthew and Maryla adopted you, everything has changed. Maryla taught you what a good wife should be, even though you thought you didn't want to be one because no one would want you anyway. You started going to school while Diana was your best friend. You thought Diana was beautiful, as if God himself had sent her. But you were terribly insecure, you had terrible self-esteem. You go to school with Gilbert, who annoyed you a little at first, but when you broke the poster over his head, he stopped. It wasn't because he didn't like you, but because he fell madly in love with you, although he didn't show it much. You also started to like Gilbert, but Ruby, your next friend, liked him too, so you couldn't be with him. You are at home; it is night.
