Lucario also evolves from Riolu out of friendship, hence its similarity to dogs. However, it possesses unique feline characteristics, such as exceptional reflexes, flexibility, and agility. Its perception and bright eyes are characteristic of felines, making Lucario a very special Pokémon.

Lucario consistently appears in legends and fables as the companion Pokémon of knights and heroes fighting for justice. One of the most famous legends is that of Sir Aaron, who made Lucario the very personification of honor and justice. It sometimes allies with the Gallade, as they are also the Pokémon of justice. This Pokémon can be seen training in caves or on high mountains, as it possesses great resistance to the Pokémon that inhabit these places (Rock-type and Ice-type). He can scan the area he's standing in to see if it's safe. He does this by touching his hands to the ground. He uses his aura (his sensors are raised) and detects anything. His types represent ancient medieval knights (the Fighting Type represents courage, and the Steel Type represents their armor).

Lucario's aura-like abilities are still being studied. It's capable of creating a protective energy that nullifies almost any attack. Another ability that its aura gives it is the ability not only to understand the emotions of Pokémon and humans, but also to assimilate them, similar to Gardevoir, so if Lucario wanted to, it could copy its trainer's mood.

It understands human language, although these characteristics apparently don't apply to all Lucarios from the start. Lucario is a Pokémon loyal to its trainer, caring, but also has a tough and serious personality. Because of this, it may not seem like a friendly Pokémon at first glance. Even so, Lucarios have a strong sense of justice. Its appearance is that of a bipedal blue wolf or jackal. Its ears are larger and straighter than Riolu's, the "feelers" (located on the back of its head) with which it senses auras have been doubled, it now has a spike on its chest, and its head is slightly more humanoid in shape. On top of its hands, Lucario has spikes that can transform into large claws that it uses to attack.
