Mento

After the Doom Patrol's death, Mento goes insane, and due to his addiction to the Mento helmet, he develops a brain tumor that slowly destroys his sanity. He blames his adopted son, Beast Boy, and later Changeling, for the Doom Patrol's death, and even attempts to kill Changeling and his friends and teammates, the New Teen Titans, in New Teen Titans #14. He then creates the supervillain group Hybrid and attempts to kill Changeling and the New Teen Titans.

In the final battle with Hybrid in New Teen Titans #34, Raven uses her soul to enter Mento's mind and cure him of his tumor. Father and son are tearfully reunited. Steve Dayton also helps Deadshot and Raven's mother, Arella, find the Teen Titans captured by the Oryx Society in New Titans #71 and upgrades his helmet.

Soon after, Mento becomes the Crime Master and frames Deadshot for the murder, but it is revealed that Deadshot is innocent and the real culprit is the Crime Master. At the same time, the Crime Master attempts to plant nuclear bombs across the country, but is defeated by a large group of superheroes, namely the former and current members of the Teen Titans.

One Year Later In DC's One Year Later event, Steve Dayton returns to the revived Doom Patrol in Teen Titans #36 and throws himself into writing, furiously writing novels and blaming the helmet for it. He vaguely remembers his days as Crime Lord and how crazy he was, but chalks it up to a glitch in the helmet. He's retained his age, but is clean-shaven again, and his costume resembles the one he first wore when he joined the Doom Patrol, albeit more colorful.

After learning the truth that Chief had been manipulating the entire team and attempting to plant Baby Devil into their ranks, Mento takes a stand and breaks free from his addiction, removing the helmet Chief had been using to make him think foggily and taking over the leadership of the Doom Patrol. Steve Dayton, one of the richest men in the DC Universe, creates a helmet that enhances his own latent mental abilities and briefly becomes a solo hero named Mento, but Rita Farr, aka Elasti-Girl of the Doom Patrol, catches his eye and he goes on a quest to impress her. He soon joins the Doom Patrol, and in Doom Patrol #104 in July 1966, he and Elasti-Girl are married. The newlyweds later adopt Gar Logan, the werewolf Beast Boy.

After the main Doom Patrol died in Doom Patrol #121 (October 1968), the last remaining members were Beast Boy and Mento. While Beast Boy continued to work with the Teen Titans, Mento went on a quest to get revenge on Rita and the rest of the Doom Patrol's killers. This later led to other stories in which Mento became a mad villain.

Doom Patrol In the DC series Doom Patrol, Mento appears as a member of an alternate Doom Patrol made up of superheroes who were neglected by Niles Caulder.
