Hunter

Hunter, like many of the Gold Guards before him, was created in the likeness of Belos's deceased older brother, Caleb Wittebane.[6] He is a humanoid boy who shares the physical traits of a witch, such as pointy ears. He has a fair complexion, a slightly hooked nose, dark magenta eyes, thick black eyebrows, a gap between his front teeth, bags under his eyes, and ash-blond hair shaved below the top, with a long, uneven cowlick. He has a notch in his left ear and scars on his right cheek, upper left arm, two on his right kneecap, forming an X mark, and one on his left calf. Additionally, he has a sigil of the Emperor's Coven branded on his right wrist. He is described by Amity as being scrawny in "Eclipse Lake", though he has a larger build compared to characters like Luz.

Emira describes him as looking sickly in "Maze Runners", although this may be due to his living conditions at the time.

While in the Human Realm, Willow cut Hunter's hair and forelock, giving him short bangs. When Belos possessed him, parts of Hunter's skin, left ear, and face turned a basil-green color that spread to his arms, turning them into those of Belos's corrupted form and simultaneously gaining the latter's blue eyes and antler-like horns. His hair also grew longer, giving him back his bangs. After being healed with Flapjack's sacrifice, Hunter received tissue scars in the areas Belos corrupted and his eyes turned brown.

In the epilogue of "Watching and Dreaming," Hunter's hair has grown a little longer and he no longer has bags under his eyes. Additionally, a red tattoo of a cardinal covers the spot on his right arm where his coven sigil had previously been, to symbolize the loss of Flapjack.

Outfit During his time in the Emperor's court, Hunter wore an ivory-colored hooded cloak with a golden triangle clasp, like other members of the Emperor's Coven. Under the cloak was a dark yellow, long-sleeved tunic with a golden yellow, short-sleeved shirt over it and a dark brown belt, black leggings, dark brown gloves, and boots. He wore a golden pauldron on his left shoulder and a two-sided, pointed mask with a thin eye slit through it. Under his tunic, he had a blue-gray shirt and golden chest armor with brown straps.

In "Eclipse Lake", he disguised himself in a standard Coven Scout uniform during his excursion to The Knee.

In "A Stormy Sport", Hunter disguises himself as a Hexside student, wearing a Hexside school uniform consisting of a gray robe with a dark gray belt, hood, and boots. His sleeves and leggings are yellow to suggest that he is affiliated with the Potions Track. Part of his Gold Guard robes can be seen hidden underneath his uniform, most notably at the collar. Hunter also wore red socks with bird designs on them.

While hiding from the Emperor's Coven in "Maze Runners," Hunter sheds his robes and re-dons his uniform shirts, albeit tattered and dirty, along with a dark blue cloak with red patches.

After joining the resistance in "Clouds on the Horizon," Hunter wears a pale pink undershirt covered by a light brown collared shirt with a cross stitch in the center, as well as a brown fanny pack. He retains the same gloves, leggings, and boots from his Gold Guard uniform.

Over the course of his stay in the Human Realm, Hunter typically wore a variety of short-sleeved button-down shirts, khaki shorts, no-show socks, and white Crocs. By late October, he consistently wore a yellow sweater with a pocket on the left breast, but alternated his bottoms, which would be blue jeans with a blue and red patch on the right and left knees, respectively, or blue pajama pants with a watermelon pattern. He wore white or purple socks, and for footwear, red sneakers and Crocs.

During the Haunted Walk, Hunter dressed as "Chief O'Bailey" from "Cosmic Frontier", with the costume consisting of a black and yellow long-sleeved shirt with a planet symbol on it, a utility belt, black pants with yellow cuffs and edges, white socks, black and dark yellow shoes, and a robotic eye accessory. However, after being possessed by Belos and returning to the Demon Realm, he discards the robotic eye and removes the shirt, tying it around his waist, revealing a custom-made black wolf undershirt underneath.

In the epilogue of "Watching and Dreaming", Hunter wears a dark blue collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up, gray pants, an orange apron, and red slippers with yellow light patterns on them. The apron features two pockets, a smaller one on the torso and a larger one at the waist, along with multiple stitched patches; a purple patch with the Abomination symbol, a light blue patch with the Illusionist symbol, and a yellow patch with the Emerald Undercity logo.

During his time as a Golden Guard, Hunter acted with authority and confidence in his personality, while praising Emperor Belos' cause. However, he was more laid-back and easygoing than Emperor Belos, sometimes coming across as comical and sarcastic in his dialogue. Despite his high-ranking position and upper-class status, he never took advantage of his power for personal gain, only using his authority when ordered to do so by Emperor Belos himself. He displayed respect towards Belos, but quite arrogance and selfishness towards others. Lilith described Hunter as a well-known brat within the Emperor's Coven and that he would always receive special treatment for being a "teenage prodigy genius",[7] though she may have been exaggerating to some extent due to jealousy.

However, he was an opportunist who was willing to use blackmail or extortion to manipulate others, offering to let Eda and Luz go in exchange for killing the Selkidomus, and then threatening to kill King when they refuse. It's hard to say whether this is due to pragmatism or just laziness, but that being said, he does give Luz a sword and does indeed let them go after he believes the job is done. Seeing that it "wasn't" done (and Eda is known as a con artist) might suggest some naivety on his part.[7] After seeing the portal key around Amity's neck, he attempted to steal it from her and threatened both her and Luz when the two were caught in a stalemate. Despite this, he was genuinely grateful when Amity complied, showing that she did so out of desperation rather than malice.[8]

Despite his easygoing personality, Hunter is easily upset when things don't go his way, as seen in his interactions with Luz. He also seems to have a fascination with wild magic, despite Belos telling him not to, and is seen freaking out on Luz. He also seems to have a soft side, as he was disgusted by the apparent murder of the Selki.

He was very loyal to Belos at first, even worrying about his "uncle's" condition whenever Belos transformed. He would occasionally offer alternatives to aid Emperor Belos with Wild Magic, but also feared his reaction at the mere mention of it. However, his loyalty was not absolute; he continually wondered why Emperor Belos had such a strong hatred for Wild Magic, yet Belos discouraged him or even threatened him when he ever brought up the idea. Furthermore, Hunter was unwilling to hand Flapjack over to Emperor Belos after the bird chose him as a mate.[9]

Despite his commitment to Belos and his supposed purpose as the Golden Guard, Hunter appears to be highly unsure of himself. Since his failed mission to find Titan friends for Belos, Hunter showed signs of anxiety at the thought of Belos replacing him and was desperate to regain his good graces. When he was unable to find any more Titan Blood, Hunter began to suffer a mental breakdown and chose to lie in a grave rather than return empty-handed, showing that deep down he fears Belos and the thought of what it would do to him if he were to fail a second time.[8] His beliefs would be completely shattered after learning the truth about the Golden Guard's lineage, and that the life he was raised in was a lie, sending Hunter into a period of trauma and depression.[4]
