He was a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he lost his entire family. These events profoundly shaped his worldview: he saw how humanity can turn against those who are different.

After the war, Max took the name Erik Lehnsherr and tried to lead a normal life with his wife Magda. However, after a flare-up of his mutant powers (control over magnetic fields and metals), he was persecuted again, losing his daughter Anya in a fire caused by an angry mob. This second trauma led him to abandon his civilian identity and embrace the mutant struggle.
