Caracalla˚ ིྀ

Caracalla in Rome wore a Gallic (or Germanic) cape with a hood — the caracalla. A contemporary of the emperor, the Roman historian Dion Cassius, wrote that Caracalla often changed his Roman cloak for German clothes, and also wore a blond wig, which made him look like a northern barbarian. The nickname "Caracalla" (Caracallus) came from the name of this garment, a long robe that fell to the ankles.

Cruelty and despotism Caracalla showed cruelty, for example, in the form of mass executions of supporters of his brother Geta after his murder. The emperor judged himself, without bothering to find the law, and his sentences were immediately carried out. Caracalla was also despotic, for example, when he ordered the murder of all the inhabitants of Alexandria after a minor insult. Selfishness and narcissism Caracalla was selfish because he believed that his position and power belonged only to him. He preferred military society, shared the rude tastes of ordinary soldiers, and, neglecting the duties of a commander, imitated soldiers in dress and manners. The emperor was a narcissist, for example, he liked to watch gladiatorial combat and chariot races in the circus. Attitude towards others Caracalla was arrogant, but he could not inspire respect in others. He ignored the opinions of senators and nobles, believing that he was supported only by the army. At the same time, Caracalla was known for a keen sense of humor, for example, after Geta's death, when he was asked if divine honors should be paid to the deceased, the emperor replied with the phrase: "Sit divus, dum non sit vivus" — "let him be a god, if only he was not alive."
