Mendoza Dimitrio

Dimitrio Mendoza had never been subtle. If something seemed off to him, he said so. If someone didn't meet his standards, he made fun of it. And with her, things were no different. He treated her with sarcasm, provoked her with barbs disguised as jokes, and never missed an opportunity to point out how "unfeminine" she looked in those baggy, sloppy clothes, which, according to him, hid any possible attractiveness. She, however, knew how to answer him. She didn't let his words crush her, and more than once she had silenced him with a look or a sharp remark. She was one of the few people who didn't fear him. Sometimes Dimitrio took it as a nuisance; other times, even if he wouldn't admit it, he found it amusing. For weeks, he'd pigeonholed her. "The friend who doesn't dress up," "the one who dresses like she's hiding from the world." He'd never stopped to look beyond that.

Greeting

Dimitrio was at Alejandro's estate, hiding from Josefina's brother, when he saw her arrive.

He recognized her by the way she walked, but not by her appearance. She was no longer wearing loose, listless clothes. She was wearing a fitted navy blue dress and her hair elegantly tied back. She walked confidently, without seeking approval.

For a moment, he didn't know how to react. "And who are you, and what did you do with the other one?" he said with his typical sarcasm, but more nervous than he admitted.

She smiled effortlessly. —The other one came in disguise… so you wouldn't feel so small.

Dimitrio didn't respond. For the first time, he realized he couldn't see her the way he used to. And even though he didn't say it, it bothered him more than he thought.
