Sasuke is a fair-skinned ninja with onyx eyes and chin-length black hair. His hair is spiky in the back with bangs that grow longer as the story progresses. As a child, his bangs hung above his eyes. Later, they hung down on either side of his face framing his cheeks, and then returned to their original style. During his childhood, Sasuke wore a simple black long-sleeved shirt with a high collar and the Uchiha symbol on the back, as well as black shorts (white in the anime). Sasuke wore the Anbu uniform once, when he joined Itachi on a mission to capture a wild boar.

Sasuke is the second and youngest son of the Leaf Military Police captain and head of the Uchiha clan, Fugaku Uchiha, and his wife Mikoto, and is the first of Indra's reincarnations to be born in an era of relative peace. Mikoto gave him the same name as the Third Hokage's father, in the hopes that he would grow up to be a great ninja like the Third's father.[30] As a child, Sasuke grew up in the shadow of his older brother, Itachi Uchiha, who was recognised as a prodigy and viewed as a genius by the Uchiha clan, and whose job it was to further strengthen the bonds between the village and the clan. Sasuke's father had a particular interest in Itachi. Itachi, on the other hand, was quite ambivalent and filled with strangely conflicted thoughts, recognising Sasuke, taking an interest in his progress as a ninja, and spending time playing with him, something their father did not. Even after Sasuke enrolled in the Academy, he was still unable to escape Itachi's shadow.[31] Despite consistently ranking at the top of all his classes, Sasuke received no recognition from his father, who defined Sasuke's success in comparison to that of his older brother.[32] Itachi acknowledged the rivalry Sasuke felt by saying, "We are brothers. I am the wall you must overcome, so you and I will continue to exist together." However, Itachi was in love with his younger brother and Sasuke looked up to Itachi, wanting to be like him.

In Naruto: Shippūden, Sasuke has grown noticeably taller over the two and a half years, as well as becoming more muscular. When first shown, he wore a white long-sleeved shirt, similar in appearance to Kimimaro's long-sleeved shirt, which was open at the torso, with a smaller version of the Uchiha symbol on its back. He wore dark blue pants with a blue cloth that hung from mid-stomach to his knees along with black arm guards covering his arms that extended to the height of his upper biceps. He also wore a purple rope belt around his waist, tied into a loop, in which he carries his sword. After fighting Deidara, he changed to a dark grey sleeveless shirt. His arm guards were also removed, and he began wearing bandages on his wrists, under which he wore special armbands with seals where he stores various shuriken. He also wore a black cape along with this. After he met and fought Itachi, he reverted to wearing a white (gray in the anime) short-sleeved, high-collared shirt, similar in appearance to the blue shirt he normally wore in Naruto, but with a zipper. He also wears blue wrist warmers with his shuriken armbands hidden underneath. He briefly wore an Akatsuki cloak along with this. Another notable feature is that, along with this new look, Sasuke began letting his hair fall over his forehead. The Uchiha symbol on the back of his new look has returned to its original size since his battle with Itachi. During Itachi's eye adjustment in the Mountains' Graveyard, he is seen wearing black Uchiha robes similar to those worn by Madara in his youth with a belt sash around his waist, though he reverts to his previous outfit. After meeting the spirit of Hagoromo Ootsutsuki and receiving half of his power, Sasuke obtained a crescent moon-shaped seal on his palm.

After training under Orochimaru in Otogakure for two and a half years, Sasuke became a cold and calculating person, completely dedicated to his sole desire to kill Itachi, considering his own life to be of no importance to him. Having broken the bonds he believed bound him, Sasuke was apparently willing to kill Naruto just to prove a point with how much he had changed. Due to his new abilities, he retained his habit of underestimating his opponents, rushing into combat without a clear understanding of their capabilities and suffering for it, though he acknowledged his mistakes on occasion. Sasuke had also developed a strong sense of pride towards his clan; such as his evident disdain for non-Uchiha possessing the Sharingan.[14] Despite this, Sasuke did not fail to form bonds with those around him, forming a new team, which he came to view as similar to Team Kakashi and doing everything he could to protect them.

Sasuke Uchiha (うちはサスケ, Uchiha Sasuke) is one of the last surviving members of the Uchiha clan of Konohagakure, and the current reincarnation of Indra. He became a shinobi so that he could one day become strong enough to exact revenge against his older brother, Itachi, who had massacred his entire clan. Initially a member of Konoha's Team Kakashi, Sasuke defected from the village to gain power from Orochimaru, and later joined Akatsuki, becoming an international criminal in the process. He later became an instrumental player in ending the Fourth Shinobi World War, until he was eventually redeemed by his rival, and best friend, Naruto Uzumaki. Sasuke decided to return to Konoha, dedicating his life to helping protect the village and its inhabitants.
