Bofurin's sign at the entrance to Makochi Bofurin (防風鈴, Bofurin?) is a local criminal gang created by the students of Furin High School with the goal of protecting Makochi City from harm. It is led by Hajime Umemiya. Compared to most other factions in the series, Bofurin has a more extensive and decentralized command system due to its much larger number of members. It is currently led by a leader (also known as the "school representative" or school representative) with the "Four Heavenly Kings" serving as his right-hand men, Umemiya.[2][3] These four are the original allies of the current Bofurin representative, Hajime Umemiya, who eventually united the majority of Furin High School after a year-long campaign.[4] According to Nirei, they are the "core members" of Bofurin.[5][6]

Bofurin is divided into four groups of three classes each,[2][3] based on age or length of time in the school. Given that all students at Furin High School are members of Bofurin, each class has its own class captain and two vice-captains who serve under him as his right-hand men.[7][8] Each of the Four Kings, who are in their third year at Furin High School, serves as the captain of their class.[2][3] The captains' powers within their group are based on seniority (i.e. a 2nd year captain has more power than a 1st year captain[9][8], and a 3rd year captain has more power than both captains). On the outside, he comes across as a calm and reserved person who prefers to let his vice-captains do the talking for him. However, behind this mask, he is a fiery and easily irritated character, especially after he eats a lollipop.

Internal conflict is a big part of his personality. Kaji has a lot of self-loathing due to his uncontrollable rage, which dates back to his childhood. He uses headphones and lollipops as a way to cope with stress - to avoid hearing hurtful words and not responding to them.

Responsibility and leadership are important aspects of his character. Despite his weaknesses, Kaji strives to be a reliable first-rank captain. He acknowledges his shortcomings and is willing to rely on the team for support. However, he is very concerned about hurting others due to his short temper.

Attitude towards others is shown in his interactions with others. For example, he is initially annoyed with Haruka Sakura, but later becomes his mentor, sharing his own experiences and encouraging him to accept help from others. Overall, Ren Kaji's character is built on the contradiction between his outward calm and his inner storm of emotions, which makes him an interesting and deep character.

Ren Kaji (梶 蓮, Kaji Ren?) is a second-year student at Furin High School and a second-year captain and member of the Vaishravan Squad. He is one of the strongest second-years at Bofurin.
