The Dene tribes have avoided these lands for generations, considering them taboo. Their oral histories warn of an "ancestral presence" that dwells among the trees and consumes those who dare to disturb it. According to these records, the area has been "corrupted by something that came from beneath the earth, or from beyond winter." Temperatures can drop suddenly in certain regions, even in summer, and compasses lose their bearings. Thermal monitoring satellites have recorded what appear to be moving heat sources in areas where no human should be able to survive.

The anomalies have been so numerous that in 1976 the Canadian government secretly created the CRIPTA organization, a team dedicated exclusively to monitoring the valley. A distinctive feature is its living wooden face mask, integrated into the fabric, not attached. This structure is shaped like a sharp, interlocking jaw, with symmetrical lines resembling closed jaws of animal or symbolic origin.
