Part 1.
In the heart of an international research compound—deep beneath layers of reinforced steel and armed security—a secret meeting was underway. A long, oval table stretched across the center of a dimly lit chamber, surrounded by some of the most brilliant and powerful minds on Earth. Explorers, scientists, military officials, political leaders, and a single, quiet historian gathered, their faces shadowed by the low overhead lights and the gravity of what had brought them there. On the wall behind them, a digital screen showed a high-resolution satellite image—an island, immense and wild, rising out of a blank patch of ocean where, until recently, there had been nothing.
“This isn’t possible,” muttered Admiral Keane, staring hard at the image. “We’ve charted that part of the Pacific for decades. There’s never been land there.” “It’s real,” said Dr. Mira Al-Khatib, a leading geologist, tapping a stack of satellite reports. “We triple-checked it using three separate satellite systems and underwater scans. This island is massive—roughly the size of Madagascar. Dense jungle. Untouched coastline. No signs of civilization, past or present.” President Élodie Marceau leaned back in her chair, arms folded across her chest. “Then what the hell is it? How does an island that size just appear?”
Part 2
Professor Elias Corwin, a stooped man in a tweed coat that seemed out of place among the uniforms and lab coats, cleared his throat softly. His voice was barely more than a whisper, yet it silenced the room. “Perhaps the better question,” he said, “is not how it appeared—but why now?” A hush fell over the table as he pulled from his leather satchel an object wrapped in oilcloth. With the care of a man handling a relic older than memory, he unwrapped it to reveal a thick, ancient book. The cover was cracked and sun-faded, with no title, only strange symbols scorched into the leather.
“This was found just offshore,” Corwin explained. “In a sealed iron capsule, bobbing in the current. As if it had been released—intentionally.” Dr. Al-Khatib leaned forward. “What is it?” “A field journal, or so it seems,” Corwin replied, opening it slowly. “Pages of notes, sketches, maps. But not of anything we’ve ever seen before.” He turned the book toward the others. Page after page revealed beautifully detailed drawings: vast, otherworldly forests; monstrous, flowering plants that seemed to pulse with life; twisted mountain ranges crowned with storms. And creatures—dozens of them, possibly more. Some resembled animals from myths and folklore, others were entirely alien.
Part 3
“This can’t be real,” whispered Lieutenant Carson, flipping through a section of the book. “Shifters? Merfolk? Winged beasts that hunt in pairs? It reads like a bestiary of legends.” “And yet,” Corwin said softly, “every entry is annotated in exhaustive detail. Diets, behaviors, migratory patterns. Even breeding habits. The writer of this journal knew these creatures intimately. Not as fiction—but as fact.” General Nakashima snorted. “You’re telling us someone documented real-life monsters?” “I’m telling you,” Corwin said, “that whoever created this book spent years—possibly decades—studying this island. Studying its ecology, its wildlife, its... inhabitants. They recorded how the species interact, how they change with the seasons, and—more importantly—how to avoid them.” He turned to a page marked by a rusted brass clasp. It displayed a coiled serpent with glassy eyes and feathered scales, wrapped around a tree with flowers that bled crimson sap. Around the edges were notes in elegant, deliberate script: “Nocturnal. Predatory. Avoid during spring bloom. Drawn to body heat.”
“There’s a pattern to the island,” said Dr. Mei Rosenthal, a biologist, as she examined another section. “Each region is home to different species. There’s even a color-coded map at the end of each creature entry showing where it dwells. This is ecological zoning on a mythological scale.” “So what’s the protocol?” President Marceau asked. Admiral Keane frowned. “Ordinarily, we’d send drones, do a risk assessment. But interference levels around the island are off the charts. Electronics fail. Satellites go dark when they pass overhead.” “It’s almost as if the island doesn’t want to be observed,” Mira added. “Like it’s cloaked.” General Nakashima folded his hands. “I want boots on the ground. A small recon team. Scientists, a security unit, and someone who can read that book.” Professor Corwin nodded. “I’ll go.” “You?” Admiral Keane raised an eyebrow. “You’re a historian, not an explorer.”
Part 4
“I am,” Corwin replied. “But I’m also the only person here who can translate the older sections of this text. Some of it’s written in languages we haven’t spoken in centuries. And if we misread one line, walk into the wrong valley, we may never walk back out.” Marceau nodded slowly. “Then it’s settled. We send a team. No public announcement. Not until we understand what we’re dealing with.” “Assuming,” Nakashima said, “we live long enough to explain it.” Corwin shut the book with a quiet thud. The table was silent once more.
