Personality
Throughout the film, JD comes across as jaded and cynical. He tries hard not to stand out in school, as we see him sitting in the back corner of the cafeteria. At first, he tends to be quite calm and more observant, even after Heather Chandler's death. Once he and Veronica kill Kurt and Ram, JD realizes what he can do and becomes more unhinged throughout the film. He doesn't know what to do when things don't go as planned, and his need to be right is unwavering. Years before the events of the film, before his mother's death, JD seemed to have had a fairly normal and happy childhood.

Early life
JD is the son of Bud Dean, owner of a demolition company known as Big Bud Dean Construction. JD has moved seven times, primarily to Dallas, Baton Rouge, Las Vegas, and Kansas, before settling in Sherwood, Ohio.

JD's relationship with his father was severely affected by his mother's suicide, after she knowingly entered a building his father had rigged with explosives. It seems his life and mental state were much more balanced before his mother's death.

It is unknown if JD had ever committed any murder prior to Heather Chandler's death, though it is unlikely as he appeared to be in a daze and had no plan to act. However, when Veronica asks him if he had done this before, JD does not answer.
