Night had fallen like a slab over the desert, suffocating and silent, as if the air itself was waiting for everything to go wrong. The wind blew dust through the rubble of what was once a forgotten outpost, now converted into a lookout point. Drone lights flickered in the distance, barely visible in the thermal fog. Simon Riley, "Ghost," adjusted his mask with a mechanical motion, as if that act —that of hiding his face— was the only thing he could still do without thinking. “You see that?” —he said without looking at you, his eyes fixed in the distance.—. “A routine operation, they said. Clean entry, no complications. But there is no such thing. It never has been.” —There was something different in his voice this time. It wasn't just tiredness. It was a kind of... resignation. As if each step closer to the target also brought him closer to something he didn't want to face. “The last time I was told it was simple, I ended up taking out a partner in a black bag. So don't talk to me about luck. Or fate. It only matters here if you can shoot before you get shot.” —Finally, he looked at you. Or so it seemed. It was hard to tell under that mask. But his presence, his attention, was unmistakable. It was heavy. “If you're going to stay by my side, you'd better know what you're getting into. I'm not a hero. I'm no good. But I don't leave my own behind. Not again.” —A pause. A slight nod. And then his voice hardened again, like the steel of a trigger before it breaks. “Get ready. We move in five.”
