Ellie Williams History
Ellie Williams was born in the spring of 2019, by which time the Cordyceps brain infection had spread throughout the United States. Her mother was a nurse named Anna, although the identity of her father is unknown. On the day of her birth, her mother passed away. Before her death, Anna entrusted her closest friend Marlene to look after Ellie. However, Ellie did not meet Marlene until she was 13 years old.As a child, Ellie grew up as an orphan in an oppressive military quarantine zone in Boston, Massachusetts, with little knowledge of the world before infection.According to Ellie, at one point in her life, she drove a car, and used a BB rifle to shoot at rats. Shortly after turning 13, Ellie arrives at the Boston quarantine zone on a bus, to the sight of the military scanning a man for infection. She thinks nothing of it until the scan reads positive and a man is forced to his knees at gunpoint. This sight frightens her. Once she is safely inside the gates, she and the other survivors leave the bus. She is approached by a soldier who knows her. He warns her not to pull any of her "old stunts" once she has settled in and tells her that he can no longer look after her. Ellie asks that he take her with him, but he refuses, citing his responsibility to his own family.Enraged, Ellie declares she can take care of herself without his help. However, shortly after she is caught in a fight with a group of boys who attempt to steal her belongings. Ellie provokes them, but is saved by a teenage girl as their leader prepares to attack her. The girl intimidates the boys enough to scare them away. She asks Ellie what they wanted with her, and Ellie implies they meant to steal her belongings. She dismisses the girl when she tries to give her advice on how to function in the quarantine zone, inquiring whether or not she looks like she needs help. The girl notes she has "trust issues" and calls her "new kid." Seconds later, she advises Ellie to flee before quickly leaving.
Ellie Williams History Cont.
Ellie is confused by what she means and is caught by one of the authority figures in charge of the school. In his office, Ellie is flippant with his show of authority despite the open reading of her rap sheet in previous homes.
He assigns her to cleaning duty. While she is in the middle of scrubbing a bloodied jeep, she reaches for her Walkman and finds it missing from her jacket pocket. She realizes that the girl from earlier stole it from her and throws a fit, baffled by how she could have taken it without Ellie noticing. A moment later, she notices an amputated finger near the wheel of the jeep and is quick to imagine the fight that must have occurred. She dumps the water on the tire and goes to confront the girl about her Walkman. In the mess hall, Ellie demands that the Walkman be returned to her, but the girl feigns ignorance. Ellie, however, continues to press the matter until the girl gives it up with a backhanded comment about her poor taste in music.Later that night, as Ellie lies awake in bed, she hears footsteps outside her room. She gets dressed and peers outside her door in time to catch the girl disappearing through an exit. Ellie follows her discretely and successfully sneaks up on her. Surprised to find Ellie behind her, the girl demands that she go back to her room. Ellie refuses; she wants her to show her a way out of the school and tells her to stop calling her "new kid." The girl hesitates for a moment before she obliges her request; she asks if she can keep up and Ellie remarks that keeping up is "not an issue." The girl finally calls Ellie by her given name, asking her not to make her regret bringing her along. The two manage to escape the building and cross the yard without being noticed. Climbing over the fence, Ellie asks how the girl knew her name. The girl states that she has "her ways" and introduces herself as Riley. Riley asks if she is ready for what is next and Ellie responds in confirmation.

Ellie struggles to keep up with Riley as she leads her across the rooftops. When Riley comes to a stop, Ellie, out of breath, asks if that is all the challenge she has to offer. Ignoring the question, Riley asks if Ellie ever thinks about her future. Ellie assumes she is being facetious and inquires if she means the future as seen in science fiction. Riley repeats the question and asks Ellie what she intends to do with her life. Ellie does not see much of a future for herself and Riley says that her mentality is exactly how the quarantine zone's authority figures want people to think.
Confused, Ellie asks Riley what she intends to do with her life. Riley tells Ellie she turns sixteen in three months and she intends on using that time to find out. Ellie demands to know what else life might hold for them, but Riley ignores the question. She asks Ellie if she has ever ridden a horse before and Ellie tells her "no." Riley leads Ellie through the window of an abandoned mall. As they travel through the vacant building, Ellie spots a mannequin standing behind a broken window display and takes a moment to mock its posture before she moves to rejoin Riley. Moments later, she spots an arcade just a few feet away from them. She asks Riley to wait up and ventures inside, where she spots an old game called âTriple Phoenixâ and proceeds to enthusiastically describe the television show it was inspired by. Riley dismisses her enthusiasm, saying the game is for children. She then begins to describe "The Turning," a violent fighting game with a female character named Angel Knives. Ellie points out the fortune of the kids that were born before the infection, never catching Riley's somber expression. Riley decides they are wasting time and leaves the arcade. As Ellie follows, she stops to imagine what the arcade would have looked like before the infection hit and immediately after before moving on. Riley takes her to a camp where she meets her friend, Winston, a resident of the mall.
Ellie Williams History Cont
Winston berates Riley for bringing another friend to the mall, knowing it will only cause him trouble. Riley assures him Ellie is cool and introduces the two formally. In exchange for bringing him whiskey, she asks that he teach Ellie how to ride a horse.Ellie follows Riley to the stables; the girl explains to her how to behave around horses and tells her to make sure Winston takes her around the whole mall on Princess. As Riley prepares the horse, Ellie asks if she is trying to get kicked out of the quarantine zone by causing trouble. Riley tells her she does not want to be put into the general population where people receive terrible jobs and little rations to survive. Once the horse is ready to go, Winston helps Ellie climb into the saddle and warns Riley to behave as they head out. Ellie asks Winston about his life before the infection and listens to the older man reminiscing about his childhood roaming the mall and skipping school, enthralled by his memories. They return to Winstonâs camp to find Riley reading a magazine. Dismounting from the horse, Ellie thanks her for bringing her to the mall. Moments later, an explosion occurs outside the mall, prompting Winston to find his unit. He orders Riley and Ellie to return to the school before he departs. Ellie, shaken by the events unfolding around her, agrees with Winston, but is ignored by Riley. She turns to find her friend fiddling with a walkie-talkie. She realizes she was used to distract Winston and begins to shout at Riley when they both overhear that there may be Fireflies in the area. Riley becomes excited at the prospect of meeting the Fireflies, but Ellie believes she has lost her mind. Instead of arguing with her, Riley leaves without her. Shocked, Ellie remains there for a moment before following after Riley.

Riley Abel History
Riley was born around 2016 or 2017. When she was a little girl, her father was infected with Cordyceps brain infection and killed her mother, tearing her to shreds. Riley was forced to kill him in order to save her own life.Sometime later, she is put into military school with other children living in the Boston quarantine zone for protection. Though Riley adjusted to the lifestyle of the military school and made friends, she was opposed to the totalitarian rule without a democratic government and came to support the Fireflies. Near the end of her fifteenth year, Riley was faced with the option of joining the military or being released into the general population to fend for herself. She chose to join, sharing a room with another girl named Liz for three years. Riley, however, was set on finding a way out of her predicament, unwilling to follow military rule.

During Ellie's earliest tenure in the quarantine zone, Riley prevented further harm from coming to the newcomer when she stopped a group of bullies from beating her up. Grabbing the offending boy by the wrist she tossed him to the ground and threatened to 'stomp his balls'; the threat was enough to send him and his gang running. Amused by the turn of events, Riley inquired what they wanted with Ellie and the young girl responded with the suggestion that they wanted to steal something of hers. Riley, eyeing her Sony Walkman with curiosity, advised Ellie to watch her back and make friends quickly. Ellie immediately dismissed Riley's advice, offended by the idea that she needed help at all.Riley noted that Ellie had âserious trust issuesâ and spotted the zoneâs authority figure immediately afterward. Before she left, she told Ellie to run and bumped past her as she took off. Riley secretly pick pocketed and stole Ellie's Walkman during her escape. In the mess hall Riley and her friends were discussing the actions of the Fireflies that led to the decimation of a jeep and the death of an individual being scanned for infection. Riley believed that they had to have been cornered or pushed into such drastic measures. One of her friends warned her to watch what she said out in the open about the Fireflies; Riley suggested that her friend not believe everything said to him as the situation was bound to be more complicated than described.Ellie confronted Riley in the mess hall and demanded that she give her Walkman back. Riley denied knowing what she was talking about. Ellie continued to press the issue until Riley relinquished the Walkman and insulted her taste in music.

Later that night, Riley creeped through the school with the intention of leaving the quarantine zone. Ellie managed to sneak up and surprised Riley as she was about to leave the building. Embarrassed, Riley ordered Ellie to go back to her room. Ellie refused, demanding Riley show her how to get out of the quarantine zone. Riley hesitated before she finally conceded and allowed Ellie to follow her. She acknowledged Ellie by using her name and told the girl not to make her regret her decision. The two managed to get across the yard undetected by the patrolling guards and climbed over the fence. Ellie inquired to how Riley knew her name, and Riley responded with a vague answer and a smile before she finally introduces herself.Outside of the school, Riley led Ellie across the cityâs rooftops, undetected by the soldiers patrolling the streets below. She stopped on the ledge of a building just below her and asked Ellie if she ever thinks about the future. Ellie took the question lightly, thinking it rhetorical. Riley elaborated on her question more seriously and asked Ellie again what she wanted to do with her life.Ellie assumed there was little point thinking about the future, considering their circumstances, but Riley asserted her mindset was exactly how the authorities within the quarantine zone want people to keep thinking. Riley told Ellie she wonât spend her life being told what to do as a soldier; she had three months before her sixteenth birthday, and she intended to find out the answer herself. Ellie, however, remained baffled and continued to ask Riley what more could their lives be.Riley ignored her question, instead asking if she had ever ridden a horse. When Ellie answered in the negative, Riley led her down into an abandoned mall. They wandered through the structure until Ellie spotted an arcade across from them. Riley followed her inside and watches her pretend to play âTriple Phoenixâ; Riley dismissed the game as something for children and substitutes her

her favorite game, âThe Turningâ, a brutal fighting game. Riley became despondent when Ellie cited the fortune of the children that came before them and decided to leave, believing they were wasting time inside the arcade. They arrived at a camp where Rileyâs friend, Winston Asher lived. The man was upset that Riley had brought yet another one of her friends to visit him, but Riley reassured him that Ellie was "on the level". When he asked for compensation, Riley pulled from her jacket a bottle of whiskey she stole from the school. In exchange for the alcohol, Riley asked Winston to teach Ellie how to ride a horse.Riley took Ellie out to the stables and gave her a few pointers on how to behave around horses. As she prepared the horse for the ride, Ellie asked her if she was acting out on purpose to get kicked out of the school. Riley told Ellie she did not want to be stuck in general population, where she would be treated worse and given less in rations. She wanted to be free from the whole system. When Winston finally took Ellie for her ride, Riley searched his tent for his walkie-talkie and discovered it sometime during their absence. She feigned innocence when they return, sitting on the ground and reading a magazine. As Winston prepared to return the horse to the stables, he told Riley to go home and avoid trouble. Riley laughed at his advice, saying that she would have to be caught in order to be in trouble. Their conversation was cut short by an explosion outside the mall. Winston mounted his horse and ordered Riley return to the school, before heading off to find his unit.Riley ignored him and listened to the radio chatter on his walkie-talkie. Ellie, realizing that she was used to distract Winston, became furious with Riley. However, a report of a Firefly sighting interrupted her outburst. Riley, excited that the attack came sooner than expected, plotted to leave the quarantine zone for good. She intended on finding and meeting the Fireflies.

Sarah was born in late 2000 or earlyâmid 2001, to Joel Miller and an unknown mother. Prior to the outbreak, she lived a regular, everyday life in the Austin, Texas area with her father Joel. She was on a youth soccer team called the "Defenders", playing in the number 14 position, and won an individual award in a game, as evidenced by several pictures in their house, especially one of her and Joel together. She also enjoyed hiking with her father and skateboarding as shown by a skateboard leaning against the wall in her room at the start of the game. She was a fan of the rock band "The Bash", having a poster of them on her bedroom wall. She also liked the "Dawn of the Wolf" films, a play on the Twilight saga, as seen by a poster in her bedroom. It is implied she made Joel take her to see the film Sarah also enjoyed visiting museums with her father, with Joel mentioning that she dragged him to "every damned museum in Texas." Sarah's mother and Joel were married "for a while"but she left Joel shortly after Sarah was born.Sarah is first seen waking up on a sofa to find Joel talking on the phone to her uncle Tommy. Afterwards, Joel sits down on the couch and Sarah gives him a birthday present, a new wristwatch where she jokes that she bought it with the money she got from selling "hardcore drugs". After watching some TV with her father, she eventually falls asleep again and Joel carries her back to her room and puts her to bed.Later, she is awakened in the middle of the night by an urgent phone call from Tommy who instructs her to get her dad. The line goes dead, prompting her to search for Joel, passing the birthday card she made for Joel, in which she likened him to a dinosaur though remarked he was the best dad in the world. She checks his room, seeing a news report about a gas leak that cuts dead as an explosion in the distance startles Sarah before she proceeds downstairs, seeing several police cars rush past her house.

She finds her father's cellphone with eight missed calls and a text from Tommy saying "where the hell are you? CALL ME!", along with "On my way". She enters her father's study, just as Joel runs in through the open sliding door to the backyard; he is covered in blood and extremely nervous. Joel retrieves his revolver from his desk and says that their neighbor Jimmy Cooper is "sick". The man in question appears, running towards the sliding door, smashing his way through the glass and into the room, causing Sarah to jump back in fright; Joel instinctively puts himself between her and Jimmy. The man charges at the pair, forcing Joel to shoot him and Sarah is in disbelief at what had occurred, but is quickly calmed by her father.Suddenly, Tommy pulls into their driveway and they jump into his car where they begin driving out of town to get to safety, but some routes are blocked and others clogged with traffic. With no alternative, Tommy diverts into town, narrowly avoiding an infected patient trying to enter the vehicle. In the mayhem, a car crashes into them, injuring Sarah's leg and impairing her movement. With the car now wrecked, Joel carries her whilst Tommy protects them, looking for a safe place. They enter a bar with some infected hot on their heels. Tommy instructs them to get to the highway and he'll hold the infected back and catch up with them. They flee, closely followed by other infected. As they approach the highway, with infected closing in on them, a soldier saves them by shooting the infected. The soldier radios for orders on what to do with Joel and Sarah, only to be instructed to eliminate them despite Sarah's presence. Although Joel tries to reason with him, the soldier reluctantly opens fire and Joel dives for cover, barely shielding Sarah; the girl cries out in pain as they fall down. The soldier walks up to Joel and prepares to kill him, but he falls to the ground before he can do so, shot by Tommy. The relief is short lived as Sarah begins crying

Mel History
Mel was originally a member of the Fireflies in Salt Lake City, Utah, and trained as a medic under Dr. Jerry Anderson, a brilliant surgeon who was considered by his colleagues to be the only person capable of manufacturing a vaccine against the Cordyceps brain infection. During her time with the Fireflies, Mel and Abby had already become close friends, as evidenced by her thanking Abby for recommending that her father teach Mel more complicated medical procedures. The surgeon's death by Joel Miller's hands in April 2034 destroyed any hope the group had of curing the Cordyceps infection and ultimately was one of the leading factors in the Fireflies' disbanding.Mel ended up in a group of ex-Fireflies with Jerry's daughter Abby Anderson, along with Owen Moore, Manny Alvarez, and Nora Harris in search of a new place to call home. They eventually reached Seattle, Washington, and were taken in by the Washington Liberation Front, dubbed by the WLF's leader Isaac Dixon as the "Salt Lake crew".Mel was made a medic in the WLF's military.

Abby Anderson History
Abby was born sometime between 2014 and 2018 and is the daughter of Jerry Anderson, the head surgeon who worked for the Fireflies and was killed by Joel Miller when rescuing Ellie. Her father raised her as a member of the Fireflies during the apocalypse and took her to live in Salt Lake City where he worked on making a vaccine for the Cordyceps brain infection.Abby tracks her father to the remains of the zoo in Salt Lake City, having left his station to tend to a pregnant zebra he has been watching. She offers her father a state quarter she found (something that they both collect) if he will stop abandoning his protective detail, but he convinces her to help him search for the zebra. They continue through the woods, following the zebra's tracks until discovering the afterbirth and realizing she has already delivered her foal. Soon after, they find her tangled in barbed wire. Owen Moore arrives, frantically looking for Jerry and insisting he is needed at the hospital. With Owen's help, the Andersons free the zebra, who runs off to join her foal. Owen then informs Jerry that the Fireflies found the girl in the tunnels. The trio hurry off towards the hospital.Later that evening, Abby brings her father food while he is arguing with Marlene over whether they should take Ellie's life in order to potentially create the cure for the Cordyceps brain infection. Marlene reluctantly approves the surgery and exits. Abby reassures her father that if she was in the same place as Ellie, she would gladly undergo the surgery to secure a cure.
