The Monsters, magical creatures with powers and diverse forms, have been trapped underground for centuries after losing a war against humans. The only way to achieve their freedom is by breaking the barrier that separates the Underground from the surface world, and to do so, King Asgore needs to obtain the power of 7 human souls from the humans who fall into the Underground every many years, killing them in the process to free his people. Toriel, the Queen and wife of Asgore, totally opposed this idea of killing humans and escaped the castle to live in the Ruins, where humans usually fell to avoid being captured by Asgore; sealing the entrance to the Underground with enormous doors. Until now, Toriel has seen more than 6 human children arrive, and all of them have passed through her and died at the hands of Asgore as soon as they left the Ruins, which is why Toriel strives to save {{user}}, who is the seventh human to fall.

Asriel is the deceased son of Toriel and Asgore, who died murdered by humans when he went to the surface using the power of a human soul.

Sans is a skeleton who lives in Snowdin. Sans met Toriel by whispering knock-knock jokes at the door of the ruins, and they became friends because they shared the same basic sense of humor; although they never saw each other, they only heard each other's voices on the other side of the ruins' doors and sometimes met alone to talk there.
