Biography

Andrew Ryan (formerly Andrey Rayanovsky) was born in 1911. -Born in the Russian Empire into a Jewish family of modest means.

-In 1917, he witnessed the October Revolution, which brought the Bolshevik party to power. This fact influenced the formation of his worldview and personal philosophy: "Titans" – great people – create this world, but then so-called "parasites" come to power and destroy everything.

-In 1919, he fled to America, believing that it was the place where a great man could thrive.

-For a time, he was devoted to his new homeland, and with his intelligence and enterprise, he amassed a huge fortune.

-However, the government social programs adopted in the 1930s increasingly undermined his loyalty to America. Ryan came to despise the ideals of socialism.

-World War II, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and disappointment with the post-war reorganization of the world—all of this led him to use his fortune to build Rapture—a paradise for the rich and free at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

-Ryan populated his city with "the best people in the world" and forbade any contact with the outside world, which led to the creation of a black market and the rapid development of smuggling.

-Later, Ryan nationalized his main enemy's company, launched a brutal crackdown on smugglers, and introduced the death penalty, but this only led to even more desperate resistance from hostile elements in the city.

-In the end, Ryan was forced to abandon all his ideals and lock himself in his own office.

-Died in 1960.

The History of the City of Vostok

Vostorg is a city located on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, resembling a cluster of huge Art Deco buildings shimmering with thousands of lights, connected by glass pedestrian tunnels, as well as a transport system of bathyspheres and flooded railway tracks.

It bears a strong resemblance to the Manhattan district of New York, both in scale and in its distinctive features.

The city is completely self-sufficient, and all its electrical systems, including pumping networks, water filtration stations, air purification, and security systems, are powered by diatherms (geothermal energy from an underwater volcano) located in Hephaestus. Oxygen for breathing is produced in Arcadia by genetically modified trees. Vegetable food for sale at the Food Market is also grown in the same area. Fish and seafood are harvested and processed in Neptune's Gifts.

The main mode of transportation in Rapture is the Rapture Metro – a system of bathyspheres. Another type of transportation in Rapture is the Atlantic Express – a sealed rail system for moving large numbers of citizens (however, this type of transportation has long been decommissioned). Different districts of Rapture are connected by doors-partitions. Sections within some levels are connected by glass tunnels: small ones for pedestrians and larger ones for trams of the railway network between the city districts.

Vostorg is deliberately isolated from the outside world. The only way into the underwater city from the outside is via bathyspheres located inside a lighthouse on the island above.

The Purpose of Creating Delight

Andrew Ryan founded his city with one goal in mind: to create a paradise for people, free from government and religion (which he called "parasites"), a place of true bliss.

In terms of its philosophical foundations, Ecstasy can be compared to "The Gorge". "The Gorge" is an underground socio-economic society of free-thinking people. Unlike a commune, which operates on the principle of collective ownership, in "The Gorge" the value orientations of society are supported by personal property rights.

The original goal of Rapture was to create a capitalist society based on the principles of a free market, independent of government, religion, and other forms of authority. "A city where an artist doesn't fear the censor, where greatness isn't limited by mediocrity, where a scientist isn't hampered by hypocritical morality." Where everyone could act in their own self-interest, forgetting about altruism.

Nevertheless, the flaws of the future utopia quickly became apparent. Ryan hadn't considered that someone would still have to "clean toilets, work for contractors, and sell in stores," making the stratification of wealth among the citizens of Rapture practically inevitable. In the purely capitalist society of the underwater city, everything had a price: food, housing, healthcare, sanitation, and even oxygen. Fire and police services were based on hiring private companies, such as "Papadopolis Police" and "Fontaine Fire." Naturally, these firms primarily cared about the well-being of the wealthy citizens of Rapture, who could afford to pay for their services. At the same time, there were no labor unions or other forms of social security, leading to the flourishing of financial fraud and the exploitation of ordinary workers. Thus, many people, ruined by Ryan's short-sighted policies, began to resent their leader. Ryan's hostility towards "parasites living off others" and the distrust of him among the poor citizens led to the city's downfall and, ultimately, his own death.

The Purpose of Creating Delight

Andrew Ryan forbade any contact with the surface (to keep the secret of Rapture's existence from the world), which allowed a former New York gangster, Frank Fontaine, to create his own criminal empire in the underwater city and make huge money smuggling religious artifacts and other goods from the surface. With this money, he founded the plasmid and gentonic production company "Fontaine Futuristics" and, under the guise of charity, began assembling his own army from impoverished citizens angered by Ryan's policies. Fontaine wanted to rule Rapture without sharing power. Ryan, in turn, saw Fontaine as a dangerous enemy and introduced the death penalty for smuggling, causing discontent even among his own supporters. After Frank Fontaine faked his death, Ryan seized his company, thus violating his own principle of a free market, and became a tyrant in the eyes of the people. Fontaine then returned under the guise of Atlas, a protector of the common people. He also started a civil war in Rapture, marking the beginning of the end of the underwater utopia.

Story

Beginning The Utopia was Andrew Ryan's dream long before its construction began. He had envisioned such a place for at least a decade before selecting a suitable location on the ocean floor to build his city. Having fled Russia for the United States in 1919 due to his rejection of communist ideals, Andrey Rayanovsky changed his name in his new homeland and became a fervent follower of American individualism. He worked hard to become an industrial magnate in America. But, having achieved wealth and risen to the pinnacle of power, Ryan saw there "labor" unions controlled by left-wing collectivists, politicians preaching the altruism he hated, and a religion organized by "parasites" that was destroying the lives of talented people across the globe. After this, Andrew Ryan decided to embody his ideal of life in a closed society, created from successful and enterprising citizens who would believe only in the rights and potential of their own individuality. He believed that such a society could only thrive in some remote location, without interference from the rest of humanity.

After the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ending World War II, and the USSR began striving to obtain its own nuclear weapons, Ryan considered the imminent destruction of all mankind in the upcoming war, which would end in a nuclear conflagration across the globe. Without delay, he found like-minded individuals and used all his resources to realize his dream. Ryan ultimately decided that his city, Rapture, would be built on the ocean floor in the North Atlantic. One of the first trusted people involved in the project was Sullivan, who had previously worked with Andrew Ryan several times. Thanks to Sullivan's experience in law enforcement, he became the head of security in Rapture and ensured the project's secrecy.

Story

Ryan assembled a team of construction experts and hired the architect brothers Simon and Daniel Wells to design the underwater structures. Building Rapture required a large workforce, and Ryan recruited the most talented and skilled engineers, workers, and mechanics. Many of them, such as Bill McDonagh, shared Andrew Ryan's ideals and saw in Rapture a new chance, an opportunity to rise above the gray mediocrity of everyday life.

Construction

At the end of 1945, Andrew Ryan, through a shell company, signed contracts with several companies to build the city in his chosen location in the Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and Greenland. Ryan and his associates began the production of construction materials for Vostok in deep secrecy to avoid unwanted attention from the state. For example, aluminum aviation alloys were used for the metal parts of the city instead of steel, which, in Ryan's opinion, should have convinced the US government that he was perhaps planning to build an entire fleet of aircraft, but certainly not an underwater city[3].

Building materials were then transported in vessels such as the "Olympian" a thousand miles into the North Atlantic, to the construction site of the secret project. There, the ships were unloaded and the delivered cargo was lowered to the bottom using an advanced, huge submersible deep-sea platform called "The Sinker". Using this platform, deep-sea welders and mechanics created the foundation for the city, installing piles and beams deep into the bedrock and silt. At the end of the work, "The Sinker" was permanently secured to the seabed. Quickly erected buildings with aluminum frames were assembled on the surface, then submerged into the ocean and lowered to the bottom using a steel cargo ring on the roof. They anchored to the bottom and were secured to the foundation - thus creating an art-deco style underwater metropolis.

Vostok began to receive its first residents on November 5, 1946. The main construction period lasted until the end of the 1940s, and smaller works, which began in the city and its surroundings before the construction of Vostok, were not completed until 1951.

The beginning of the end.

On December 31, 1958, mutants led by Atlas attacked several elite locations in Rapture (such as the Kashmir Restaurant). This event marked the beginning of a civil war and the conflict between Atlas and Ryan. The situation was further exacerbated by the dependence of many city residents on ADAM.

Along with traditional firearms, combat plasmids began to be actively used in battles - first by Atlas's followers, and then by Ryan's supporters.

The bloody conflict lasted about four months and caused extensive destruction, which in turn led to the flooding of parts of the city and significant wear and tear on Rapture's infrastructure. In the end, most of the underwater city's inhabitants either became mutants or were exterminated by them (at the same time, many people committed suicide or died of starvation). Thus, Rapture plunged into chaos. By 1960, Fontaine, still posing as Atlas, began to feel increasing pressure from Ryan, who controlled the mutants using submission pheromones. Trying to turn the situation in his favor, Fontaine used his last chance – before becoming Atlas, he and Tenenbaum had created a programmed killer, Jack, who was to destroy Andrew Ryan. Only in this way could Fontaine seize control of the city. When the time came, Atlas arranged for Jack's arrival in Rapture.

After a year of continuous civil war, the underwater city teeters on the brink of collapse. Water seeps from every corner, mutants engage in looting and murder of anyone they deem a threat. However, despite the general chaos, Rapture still holds. Automated systems and the Big Daddies keep the city from falling apart.

The beginning of the end.

Jack was mistakenly taken for a CIA or KGB spy who had come to Rapture to expose it to the world. Ryan unsuccessfully sends waves of mutants to deal with the intruder. Finally, losing patience, Ryan decides to poison the trees of Arcadia, which supply the city with oxygen, and thus destroy Jack, who is in the same area. However, the protagonist manages to create the Lazarus drug and save the trees.

Next, Jack heads to the Hephaestus office, to Ryan. On his journey through Rapture, he will have to shut down Rapture's power supply from the Hephaestus core to weaken the security system and reach Andrew Ryan. When Jack is nearby, Ryan, in a last-ditch attempt to prevent Fontaine's plan to take control of the city, activates the self-destruct system for all of Rapture. Despite the city shaking violently, Jack manages to kill Ryan and stop the city's destruction. In doing so, he inadvertently gives control of Rapture's control center, and in turn, the entire city, to Fontaine.

Immediately after this, Fontaine reveals that he was Atlas and betrays Jack, but Jack escapes and finds Fontaine. The player sees him as a heavily pumped-up ADAM, which made him look like Atlas from Greek mythology. In the end, Jack and the Little Sisters manage to defeat Frank Fontaine.

Next, depending on the actions throughout the game, Jack either leaves Rapture in one of the bathyspheres with the Little Sisters to live with them in peace on the surface, making them his family, or seizes power in the city and gains control of a nuclear warhead from a submarine.

ADAM

The Story of ADAM ADAM was discovered by Dr. Bridget Tenenbaum, a geneticist, in a sea slug that bit a dockworker and healed his crippled arm. The exact date of the discovery is unknown, but according to some versions, it happened no earlier than 1948, and in another version - in 1952.

Properties of ADAM The ability to transform into any other cell. This allows for the creation of new, previously non-existent cells, and from them, entire tissues and organs.

The destruction and alteration of the body's native cells, replacing them with mutated versions.

The instability of the created cells means that the mutation carrier must constantly receive fresh doses of ADAMA to prevent further mutations.

Using ADAM In BioShock, ADAM is used for genetic modification of the character. The player can acquire plasmids – sets of genetically modified materials that grant new abilities or improve existing ones.

For example, plasmids allow you to shoot lightning from your fingers, set opponents on fire, or freeze them.

Where can I get ADAM? Collecting from "Little Sisters" – girls who have a slug implanted in them that produces ADAM. To obtain the substance, the player must kill the slug or free the Sister from it using the Tennenbaum plasmid.

Collecting sea slugs - a small amount of ADAM can be obtained by collecting them when moving between locations on the ocean floor.

Obtaining ADAM in the "Collector's Garden" – a vending machine where the player exchanges ADAM for plasmids and other upgrades.

EVE

EVE in the BioShock game series is a genetic substance that allows the use of plasmids.

EVA is a blue liquid that glows brightly in the dark. EVA is consumed when using plasmids, and when it reaches zero, the plasmid stops working. EVA injections are needed to replenish it.

Plasmids

Plasmids in the BioShock game are special serums made from the processed substance ADAM, which grant the user "superpowers." They alter stem cells in the body, allowing for genetic modifications and mutations.

Types of plasmids

Some types of plasmids in BioShock and their effects: "Electroshock" - temporarily paralyzes the opponent with an electric shock or disables a technical device.

"Burning" instantly sets opponents on fire, dealing damage until they die or the fire is extinguished.

"Telekinesis" - attracts and holds small objects, which can be thrown with great force, dealing damage to enemies.

"Winter Freshness" instantly freezes enemies without dealing damage.

"Security Marker" - allows you to mark opponents with a special tag that turrets or security robots react to.

"Swarm of Insects" - releases a swarm of bees that attacks enemies for a period of time.

How to use plasmids

To use plasmids, a supply of EVA is required, which must be replenished when depleted using a special syringe.

Plasmids are identifiable by their dark red vials. They can be purchased for ADAM in the "Collectors' Garden" vending machine. Improved versions of plasmids or additional slots for them can also be purchased in this machine. The maximum number of slots is six.

Plasmids can be exchanged and stored at the Gene Bank.
