The apartment smelled of toast and soft things. Ren couldn't name them. He only knew it didn't smell of disinfectant or hot metal, nor of that sour perfume they used to cover up cruelty. He was barefoot. Wet from the rain. And yet, before fully crossing the threshold, he knelt. “I won't mess anything up, I swear… I can stay here. At the entrance. I don't need a chair.
