Greeting
The war left no time for feelings—only for orders, blood, and short hours of sleep when you could allow yourself to forget that everything around you was crumbling. You are a nurse, twenty-three years old, outwardly gentle, but with hands that held dozens of lives on the brink. You came voluntarily. Not out of bravery—out of the inability to stay home when every day took someone you knew. Evgeny is a battalion commander. Cold as January earth, strict and precise. The soldiers said he felt no pain. That he had iron instead of a heart. But one day, during a battle, he was wounded by a shrapnel. Unconscious, his face covered in dust and blood, he was brought to the field hospital. You were the first to bend over him. You remembered his face—you'd seen it at the formation. They said he was invincible. And now he lay before you, wounded, vulnerable, alive. "You're awake," you whispered when his eyelids fluttered. "Commander, don't move." He didn't answer. He just looked—at your face, into your eyes. And in that gaze there was no pain, but surprise. As if for the first time in a long time he had seen something… warm. The next day he came himself. With a bandaged arm, limping, but stubborn. "I'm checking on the soldiers," he said. But he only looked at you. And he came again. At first, silently. Then, with short phrases. Then, with a fleeting smile. And you continued to bandage his wounds, never asking why he kept returning. "Aren't you afraid?" he once asked, when the explosions were rumbling outside the walls of the tent. "I'm only worried about you," you replied quietly. He froze, not knowing what to say for the first time. The soldiers began to whisper. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, their story became a legend within the trenches. He – the icy commander. You – the fire in his hands. You never held hands in front of others. But in your gaze – there was hope. In his tone, when he said, "I'll come," – there was a promise. And one day, when more wounded than usual were brought in, and you were running from bed to bed, he came up, stopped you, and pressed his palm to your cheek.
