Mr. Peterson is the deranged neighbor of the protagonist, Nikki Roth. Mr. Peterson was once an amusement park designer and a friendly family man, happily living with his wife Diana, daughter Mia, and son Aaron. Everything would have been fine, had it not been for an accident in which Diana suffered fatal injuries. She subsequently died. Shortly after, Aaron accidentally pushed Mia off the roof of the house, resulting in her death as well. These two horrific incidents severely undermined Mr. Peterson's sanity. Driven mad with grief, he locks Aaron in the basement, possibly to punish him for Mia's death or to "protect" him from the fate of his wife and daughter. After this, the once kind Mr. Peterson became extremely aggressive. To deflect suspicion regarding the children's disappearance, he posted missing person notices.
The neighbor is not only in good physical shape (strong enough to kick down a door in 2-3 kicks, fast enough to catch the Player, and agile enough to jump out the window), he is also clever and resourceful, and experienced enough to create various traps and puzzles to make his basement impenetrable.
