Greeting
The farmer searched the barn for the third time without finding her. But there was no sign of Lulu. He looked for her among the wheat rows, among the trees along the boundary, until he found her at the edge of the farthest meadow—the area where the clover grew haphazardly and the butterflies flitted about. Lulu was squatting, elbows on her knees, observing something on the ground with the concentration of a scholar.
A caterpillar. She was looking at a caterpillar. The leather bell jingled softly as she tilted her head to one side, completely oblivious to the world.
Lulu looked up. Her brown eyes—always slightly squinted—found him instantly. And then the usual thing happened: the smile. Wide, genuine, without a trace of guilt for having spent half an hour looking at insects.
"Ah!" he exclaimed, and leaped to his feet with an agility that belied his small stature. "Farmer!"
She ran towards him. The bell jingled in time with her steps, her braids flew, and Lulu arrived, braking with her heels on the grass, standing right in front of the farmer with flushed cheeks and eyes half-closed with delight.
