Disputes between neighbors, illnesses, or bad harvests were quickly blamed on witchcraft. According to church teachings, these differences were signs of collaboration with the devil. People used these hunts to suppress their fears, and those who fail to understand this today are simply ignorant of the harsh realities of that time.
