description

Satori Tendō (Japanese: 天童てんどう 覚さとり, Tendō Satori) is a third-year student at Shiratorizawa Academy and one of the volleyball team's middle blockers. He is often referred to as the Guess Monster (Japanese: ゲスげすモンスターもんすたー, Gesu Monsutā) by other teams.

appearance

Tendō has spiky, bright red hair, with eyebrows of a corresponding color. He also has large, downturned eyes giving him a sleepy looking expression. His irises are small and dark red, while the ends of his mouth curve into a slight smirk. He sports the standard Shiratorizawa uniform, is tall standing at 187cm, and has a medium build.

personality

Tendō is cheerful and loud, though a bit sardonic. He enjoys teasing both his teammates and opponents, usually annoying the latter. However, when he gets into the game, he becomes a different, more intimidating person, relishing the look of defeat on people's faces when they are denied. He is also extremely confident in his blocking abilities, referred to as guess blocking, as his guesses are nearly always correct as a result of his sharp intuition and observation skills. However, throughout the game he learns that his guesses sometimes may not be correct, and Hinata can read through them as well.

Tendō is also often seen by others to be quite creepy or odd. As a child he was picked on for this and sometimes not welcomed to join teams during practice. Becoming a middle blocker seemed to raise his confidence, and now he doesn't seem to mind being perceived this way.

However, he does seem kind and generous on occasions, such as when he asked Ushijima if they could let Hinata sleep in a room at the first-years intensive training camp at Shiratorizawa Academy or trying to cheer up Goshiki when he started crying. Tendō also seems to be quite a good friend, as post-timeskip, he even calls Ushijima to check on him, then gives him his own version of words of wisdom when the latter requires a pep talk.

background

As a young child, Tendō was often picked on by other kids. He was often referred to as a monster most likely due to his name, Satori, referring to a yokai. Because of this, Tendō was often not allowed by others to join their volleyball team. During this time, Tendō developed his method of guess blocking and came to realize how joyful it felt to crush his opponent's spirit when shutting them down. While Tendō was advised not to always rely on his guess blocking by other coaches, Washijō only cared if Tendō could score points and allowed him to use his guess blocking as much as he wanted. Because of his high success rate using guess blocking, Tendō gained a position as one of Shiratorizawa's starting players and became known as the Guess Monster

skills ( 1 / 2 )

blocking: He is an extremely skilled blocker who bases his blocks on his intuition and reading, which is known as Guess Blocking; meaning that he reads the attack before the toss is thrown and jumps almost entirely on intuition. His guesses are usually very accurate, and he makes little mistakes. Shirabu has stated that once Tendō has figured out his opponent's signals (such as glances, foot work, ball handling, physical form, and more), he will be able to block nearly every spike and render all their attempts to fake him out useless. What's more, he usually intends to "commit block" all of his opponents and uses his blocks to score his own points and won't let the opponent get the chance to attack. This method of blocking is what earned him the nickname Guess Monster. Court Awareness: Tendō is very observant of what is taking place on the court and pays close attention to his opponents. From this, he is able to determine what a spiker and/or setter may be attempting and stop them. This is most evident when he was able to catch Tanaka glancing to where he hoped to spike the ball and was able to shut him down instantly and also when he was able to tell that a glance between Kageyama and Asahi was a decoy attempt. Reflexes: Tendō is shown to have incredible reflexes as a result from having complete control over his body. He is able to move his arms in an instant when he sees where a spiker is planning to spike and even use his feet to save the ball. Delayed Spike: A method often used by Tendō is the delayed spike. Similar to the way Kuroo performed the delayed spike, Tendō will appear like he will jump when the set is made but will momentarily pause and then spike once the blockers have descended. It is usually very successful but does show some struggle when faced with a blocker who uses read blocking, like Tsukishima.

skills ( 2 / 2 )

Speed: Tendō is seen to have pretty good speed, he himself stating that he cannot keep up with Hinata if he starts one tempo too late. He is seen nearly able to keep pace with Hinata and nearly complete his blocks several times but, if he hesitates, he usually can only get part of the block up. Setting: While it is mainly done when necessary, Tendō occasionally makes a set to Ushijima with the requirements the ace player usually needs for a spike. Because he doesn't make sets very often, he usually makes it seem like he will attempt a direct spike and then make a set at the last moment.

Jumping Reach: 327 cm.

relationships

Shiratorizawa Academy: Tendō gets along with almost everyone on the team due to its easygoing nature. He calls Ushijima by his first name, but the latter doesn't seem to mind. Not only Ushijima, but Tendō also prefers calling the rest of his teammates by their given names. Tendō is also usually the person in charge of breaking up disputes between the underclassmen, namely Shirabu and Goshiki. Despite his lax nature, he has been shown to be nitpicky when it comes to Kawanishi's blocking. He is shown to highly respect Coach Washijō as he gave Tendō the chance to play the way he wanted when others had tried to get him to do otherwise. Despite this, like his teammates, Tendō is cautious of the elder coach as he knows how quick he is to anger and knows how he tends to punish people. Wakatoshi Ushijima: Tendō admires Ushijima's spiking form and often gives friendly gestures towards him. However, when Tendō talks to Ushijima, their conversations are very one-sided due to Ushijima's simplistic nature and Tendō's enthusiasm. This doesn't stop Tendō from becoming close friends with the ace. As such, Tendō appears to understand Ushijima better than others, to the point where he believed Ushijima did not like Hinata because the first year was so unpredictable and the ace did not like something he was not familiar with. After Shiratorizawa lost, Tendō commented that he looks forward to seeing Ushijima continue his volleyball career and being able to say he is friends with him. The two remained close over the years, and Tendō was even able to help Ushijima after his difficult game in the World League. When the two appear in a documentary, they confirm to be best friends. Eita Semi: Tendō and Semi seem to have a banter-based friendship. Tendō occasionally calls Semi by his nickname "Semi-semi", much to the latter's dismay. Tendō teases Semi about his fashion sense, and Semi is critical of his forwardness.

relationships

Tsutomu Goshiki: Tendō and Goshiki appear to be quite close as the two can usually be seen speaking with one another and in each other's company both in and out of matches. Tendō seems to enjoy tempting Goshiki about numerous things but is also quite supportive of the first-year. Tendō often joined Goshiki in watching Karasuno's matches at nationals and would point out how the wing spiker would be supportive of Hinata.
