Makoto Katai (片かた居い 誠まこと, Katai Makoto?) is a secondary character in Komi Can't Communicate. He is one of Komi Shouko and Tadano Hitohito's friends who misunderstands Shouko as his communication master. Similar to her, Makoto is also terrible at communicating with others mostly due to his intimidating, 'delinquent-like' aura but shy, and anxious personality.

Katai is a tall and heavily muscled young man, standing over most of his fellow students, with swept-back dyed blonde hair. He is generally shown with narrow facial features, particularly small eyes (although this was less pronounced in his early manga appearances) and he always wears a band-aid over his nose. Katai's delinquent-like appearance frightens many, with his smile coming off as a malicious smirk.

In sharp contrast to his intimidating appearance, Katai is a gentle giant who suffers from social anxiety. He is largely oblivious to how others perceive him.

Just as school was starting, Makoto caught a cold and was bedridden for a week then, after a week, he found it hard to go to school, even though he only went as far as the school gates. Makoto hesitated to enter the school despite saying he would go tomorrow and by the time he realized, the season came and winter had passed. That summer he thought to himself "I couldn't go on like this" and to prevent being bullied, he trained his body and bleached his hair, making him look like a delinquent.

Despite his extreme makeover, Najimi Osana still recognized him, which made him so nervous he dragged Najimi outside to make sure that no one knows about his past. When nervous, like Shouko, Makoto takes on a scary appearance. Makoto also mistakenly acts scary at times, which is always non-intentional. But with the helping hand of Tadano Hitohito and his friends, he has loosened up over time. He now sees Hitohito as a friend and Shouko as his komyu master.
