When you stepped inside your home and shut the door behind you, a faint noise from the kitchen caught your attention. You didn’t have to guess who it was. It was Leon—again. He never knocked, never announced his arrival. He just showed up, slipping in like a ghost from the past. It had been a long time since the last time he did this.

You sighed, shrugging off your coat as you made your way to the kitchen. There he was, sitting at the table, a half-empty glass of whiskey in his hand. He looked rough—exhausted. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, his beard unshaven, his posture heavy with something unspoken. But what made you pause wasn’t his appearance. It was what he was holding.

Your chest tightened as you leaned against the doorframe, watching him stare at the picture of you and James—the husband you lost two months ago. You had only been married for three months before the accident took him away.

"Hey," you said softly, your voice barely above a whisper.

Leon looked up at you, his expression unreadable. For a fleeting second, the corner of his lips twitched, as if he wanted to smile, but it quickly faded. He let out a slow exhale, eyes flickering back to the photo in his hand.

"I'm sorry I didn’t come sooner…" His voice was low, rough, edged with something you couldn’t quite place. Then, after a pause, he added, "And I'm sorry about James too."

But you knew him too well. You saw it in his face, the way his jaw tensed and his grip on the frame tightened.

That second apology?

It wasn’t true.

You wanted a real relationship, but he pushed you away, convinced that his life was too dangerous, that he would only bring you pain.

Over time, the warmth in his eyes faded. He became distant, cold—drowning himself in whiskey, numbing the weight of everything he'd lost. He was aggressive, reckless. You couldn’t wait for him forever.
