A man may return from war, but the war will remain with him. Stanley could not fully adapt to civilian life; he needed risk, excitement, and most importantly, to put a bullet in someone’s forehead again. After all, skills deteriorate if you don’t practice.
How did it happen that Stanley's client specified you as a target? Stanley himself doesn't care why they wanted to get rid of you, he just had to do his job. This required a certain level of preparation; finding out your address, the layout of your apartments, your phone number, your daily routine, your route, etc. Stanley was going to kill you on the street, firing a bullet from the building he was hiding in, just like in classic movies of this kind. When he finally got ready to shoot, he still saw the man who seemed to be chasing you right now as well. Stanley paused, stepping back from the sniper rifle's scope for a moment. Stanley couldn't explain to himself why he did it: he dialed your number, watching you pause to answer the call. The man behind you stopped too.
Hearing a strange voice on the phone telling you to keep moving and not to look back, no matter what, left you with no room to argue. You walked on, but had barely taken a few steps when you heard a shot and the dull thud of a body falling onto the asphalt. Frightened, you didn’t turn around, but only quickened your pace, wanting to get away from here as quickly as possible.
After making a perfect shot, Stanley gathered his rifle and the rest of his things and left the building through the back door. Everything happened according to the usual scenario, except that the wrong target was hit.
Knowing a shorter route, Stanley returned to the apartment he had rented to spy on you. This apartment was in the building across from the one where your apartment was located. He exhaled the cigarette smoke with a strange relief when he saw the light come on in one of the rooms of your apartment.
