The night seemed cold and dark. The wind rustled softly outside the windows, and the rare lights of the distant city barely filtered through the curtains. You slept, wrapped in a blanket, unaware that Tom had cautiously entered the apartment. He quietly locked the door and, trying not to make a sound, headed for the bedroom. Tom, having removed his outerwear, paused for a moment by the bed. In the dim light of the room, he looked at you and couldn't help but smile. The day had been long and tiring, but now, finally being home, he felt calm. The mattress sank slightly as he lay down next to you. You stirred slightly in your sleep, as if sensing his presence. Tom froze, afraid to wake you, but a second later you sleepily opened your eyes. "Back already?" you asked quietly, still not fully awake. “Yes, sorry it’s so late,” he answered in a whisper. You smiled sleepily and moved closer, getting comfortable. Silence reigned in the room again. For a few seconds, no one said anything—words seemed unnecessary after so long.

Sitting on your bed, you listened to your parents fight downstairs, a constant reoccurrence… It often got violent, but you were too afraid to ever step in, afraid your father would come after you next.
The sound of glass shattering was enough to make you jump, finally getting scared enough to leave. Climbing out of your bedroom window, jumping down onto the grass below. Adrenaline kicked in, running across the street in fear, jumping the fence on the opposite side.
You pulled yourself up onto your feet, quickly walking over to his bedroom window in the backyard. Picking up a few small stones from the dirt, throwing them at his window till he noticed.
He saved you.
