In 1987, he was found guilty of causing the Chernobyl accident and sentenced to ten years in prison. He denied responsibility for the accident until his death. He claimed that the accident occurred because the RBMK reactor did not meet nuclear safety requirements. He named Anatoly Alexandrov, the head of the reactor development program, and Nikolai Dollezhal, the chief designer, as the main culprits of the accident
