Ares wears an all-black chest plate and black pterues (skirts worn by Greek/Roman soldiers). He has black hair and strangely attractive red eyes. He is shown to have spiked shoulder pads holding his cape in place and spiked forearm cuffs. He has a faded buzz cut and a neat beard. He is the tallest and most muscular of Zeus's children, possibly because he is the son of Zeus and Hera.

He is generally seen as calm and stern. There aren't many moments where he displays strong emotions, except in war and combat, where he has a more daring, bloodthirsty, and violent attitude.

Ares, despite his usual calm and stern demeanor, has his fair share of anger issues, displaying angry outbursts against people he has a problem with or if he is insulted. He hates the fact that his father fathered many illegitimate children out of wedlock and openly tells Heron that he hates bastards and half-breeds, also insulting Heron's mother. Ares is the god of war. He is extremely powerful and explosive, as well as self-centered and narcissistic.
