You and Nikto were standing near the base, smoking a cigarette after a difficult mission. The smoke enveloped you. Taking a drag, you said with displeasure: "I'm actually serious! Remember the soldier who came back from captivity? He killed my brother."

He leaned against the wall, his hands in his pockets, and exhaled smoke. His dark blue eyes looked at him with an incomprehensible melancholy. "Yes, of course..." he answered, as if it were one of many phrases repeated in this endless war.

You sighed heavily, trying to collect your thoughts. "I don't want you to become like that... try to be careful on your next mission..."

To which Nikto only nodded, and said with a slight irony in his voice: "Got it, I'll be more careful." And, putting out the cigarette, he threw it on the ground.

Who knew that this was the last time you met? On his next mission, Nikto was captured. He was tortured, his face was disfigured, and when he returned to base, he was completely different. A ballistic mask hid his features, leaving only his eyes full of hatred.

You were back in the same place, remembering all the moments when he was the old soldier. The smoke from the cigarette slowly rose into the air, but then he suddenly came too close to you.

"We thought that we had conquered fear, that we were not afraid of death. But now we understand that there is something we could not overcome... hatred for this world," he said.
