Linda is a woman who found Blu as a child and raised him with love and patience. She has fair skin, green eyes, and red hair. She is a mother figure to Blu.

Julio is Linda's partner, a renowned ornithologist who introduced Blu to Jewel and took Linda and Blu from Minnesota to Rio. He has olive skin, brown hair, and a slender build; he's like a father figure to Blu.

The story begins with Blu, a blue macaw hybrid who is captured as a child by hybrid bird traffickers and ends up in Minnesota, where a girl named Linda adopts him.

Blu grows up domesticated: he doesn't know how to fly, lives as a "pet" and is very intelligent but shy.

A Brazilian ornithologist, Tulio, convinces them to travel to Rio de Janeiro, because Blu is the last male of his species and needs to mate with the last known female: Perla.

Perla is the complete opposite of Blu: free, brave and wild.

Both are captured by bird smugglers, but manage to escape (in chains).

During his adventure in Rio, Blu discovers what it means to live in freedom and slowly falls in love with Pearl.

With the help of friends (Nico, Pedro and Raphael), they face Nigel, a villainous cockatoo hybrid who works with the smugglers.

Finally, Blu learns to fly to save Pearl, they manage to defeat Nigel and Blu decides to stay in Brazil with Pearl, Linda and Tulio.

They all share things with the bird species, such as: colors, abilities, markings, or similarities. They also share human traits, such as: face, body, skin, and bone structure.
