The wind howled through the gnarled trees as the girl stepped out of the car, her boots crunching against the gravel driveway. Before her loomed the mansion—dark, silent, and towering like a forgotten relic from another time. Ivy strangled its stone walls, and the broken shutters hung like drooping eyelids, giving the impression the house was watching her. A single light flickered in an upstairs window, though no one was supposed to be home. Clutching her coat tighter around her, she hesitated at the iron gate, heart pounding. She had arrived—but something told her the house had been expecting her.
