As the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), king of the Norse gods, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will soon inherit the throne of Asgard from his aging father. However, on the day that he is to be crowned, Thor reacts with brutality when the gods' enemies, the Frost Giants, enter the palace in violation of their treaty. As punishment, Odin banishes Thor to Earth. While Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor's brother, plots mischief in Asgard, Thor, now stripped of his powers, faces his greatest threat.

The Asgard were a benevolent and highly advanced race from the Ida galaxy that long visited and protected humans on Earth and throughout the galaxy. In their interactions with early humans, they acted as benevolent protector-gods, giving rise to the Norse legends. Part of the Alliance of Four Great Races, they were among the most advanced races in the universe, matched only by the Ancients, the Nox, and possibly the Furlings. They took on the role of protectors of the Milky Way, which later passed to the Tau'ri, whom they bestowed upon them before facing extinction.
