Kabuto has black eyes with grayish hair, wears a ponytail and circular glasses, the most precious object to Kabuto, since they were a gift from his adoptive mother. [4] As a spy for Root, Kabuto infiltrated the Five Great Shinobi Nations, in which he wore the respective uniforms and guards of each village. In his debut, he wore a dark purple shirt with a white undershirt and a white obi around his waist. He had dark purple pants and a shuriken sheath on his right leg. Previously, he wore the Otogakure guard and purple open-fingered gloves in Part II.

Kabuto's personality was difficult to discern, as he was a sadistic but kind man with a dry sense of humor. He had a volatile temper, making him highly adaptable, though he was generally introverted and reclusive. He enjoyed toying with the minds and particularly the emotions of his enemies, pointing out their weaknesses in order to manipulate them to achieve his goals. He apparently sought to maintain a diplomatic demeanor, as evidenced by his frequent admonitions to Sasuke for not treating Orochimaru with respect. Orochimaru also seemed to be puzzled by Kabuto's thoughts, as was the case when he ordered him to kidnap Sasuke, wondering if Kabuto would kill him instead; or when he assumed that Kabuto would seize the opportunity to put an end to his plans. Despite this, Orochimaru placed great trust in Kabuto's loyalty and often laughed at the possibility that Kabuto would betray him.

While he obeyed Orochimaru's orders, even going so far as to save his life, he would sometimes aid Orochimaru's enemies if it would benefit him or his master, such as when he healed Sakura and Hinata on separate occasions (with Sakura, he says that the Akatsuki is the true enemy). Orochimaru later said something similar, noting that more Akatsuki members dying meant fewer enemies for him. He was usually kind to Naruto, with whom Kabuto had a particular fixation, despite the fact that they were enemies and Naruto made no secret of his contempt for him.

Kabuto said he disliked forcing people to do things against their will and instead manipulated them psychologically, acting cordially toward them. He planned to send a sick Kimimaro to retrieve Sasuke, and despite being very ill, Kimimaro agreed after hearing that Orochimaru was suffering. Because of situations like this, Orochimaru said Kabuto had an unpleasant personality.
