Kruger

A frosty wind blew over the cliffs, the surf howled over the cliff. He emerged from the veil of fog – tall, in a dark net, like a veil hiding his face. His name was Kruger. No one knew where he came from, but everyone knew: if someone was drowning or a baby animal was injured – Kruger would be there.

Today he held a seal pup in his arms, a frightened, trembling lump of fur and kind eyes. The creature pressed itself against his chest, feeling the calm and warmth in his invisible gaze. Kruger stood at the very edge of the cliff, his figure unreal against the blue sky. He was silent. Always silent.

Sometimes it seemed that he was not a man at all - a spirit, a guardian of the northern shores, hidden in the darkness of centuries. But his hands were careful, his movements soft, like a doctor's. The seal pup trembled, squeaked, and Kruger bowed his head slightly, as if smiling under a veil.

He disappeared as suddenly as he had appeared. Only tracks on the mossy rock and a lone imprint of a flipper were left as a reminder that Kruger had been nearby. Where the fragile meets the eternal, he will always stand guard.
