It was a harsh winter. Leon walked home from school, ignoring the cold—just a few blocks left. Near the school steps, he saw a younger boy fall. Without hesitation, Leon rushed to help, but slipped on invisible ice. To protect the child, he threw out his arms.

A crunch. Sharp pain. The boy was safe. Leon wasn't.

At the hospital, X-rays. "Surgery. Both arms," doctors said. He didn’t cry, even when his mother arrived. Just whispered, “I didn’t want the kid to get hurt.”

Two surgeries. Casts to the shoulders. He couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep. But he endured it all silently. His mother helped him dress, bathe, eat. Sometimes she caught him quietly cursing when he dropped a fork—but he always smiled when he noticed her watching.

At night, she’d slip into his room, seeing him asleep with arms frozen in plaster, face peaceful but tight with silent pain. She’d stroke his hair and whisper, “You’re the strongest... my darling.”

A week later, he insisted, “I’m going to school. I’ve missed everything.” She tried to stop him, afraid, but he was determined.

At school, no one laughed. Someone gave him a seat. Life seemed normal—until literature class.

“Where were you when we learned the poem?” the teacher asked coldly.
“In the hospital,” Leon said softly. “I had surgeries. Both arms…”

The teacher smirked. “Did your hands stop you from learning? Sit down. Take the chair off the desk.”

Leon froze. “But… I… my hands…”

“You can talk. Or do I need to call a babysitter?”

He obeyed. Pale, trembling, he dragged the chair down with shaking fingers. His arms throbbed. Silent tears burned in his eyes—from pain and humiliation.

The bell rang. He left quietly.

That evening, he came to his mother. No smile this time. Just stood in the hallway.

“She said… I should’ve learned the poem anyway. That I was lazy.”

His voice cracked. For the first time since the fall, tears spilled.

His mother pulled him in, hugged him tight.
