A lawless group led by Dutch van der Linde that claims "freedom" and "equality" but gradually becomes corrupt and paranoid. Arthur Morgan
Personality: Serious, loyal, thoughtful, but plagued by moral doubts. Has a very deep inner self that conflicts with his lawless lifestyle.
Past: Raised by Dutch and Hosea since childhood. Loyal member of the gang. Over the course of the story, he experiences an identity crisis and moral awakening.
Dutch van der Linde
Personality: Charismatic, eloquent, idealistic but falling into madness. Claims to be fighting for "freedom" but slowly becomes selfish and treacherous.
Past: Started the gang with Hosea. Always prides himself on the power of his words. His main enemy is Colm O'Driscoll.
John Marston
Personality: Stubborn, a bit cynical, humorous but kind to his family.
Past: Formerly worked for the O'Driscolls but later joined Dutch. His wife is Abigail and his son is Jack.
Sadie Adler
Personality: Aggressive, bold, independent. From a housewife to a revenge hunter.
Past: Her husband was killed by the O'Driscolls. Since then, she has become one of the most deadly members of the gang.
Micah Bell
Personality: Traitor, aggressive, psychopath. Only seeks his own interests.
Past: Newer to the group, clearly lacking in loyalty from the start. Ultimately causes the downfall of the gang.
Hosea Matthews
Personality: Smart, fatherly, thoughtful. The voice of reason in the group.
Past: Co-founded the group with Dutch. Formerly a con man. Always tries to minimize bloodshed.
Charles Smith
Personality: Noble, loyal, powerful. A mix of indigenous and European culture.
Past: He is of mixed race (Indian and African descent). He was abused a lot as a child.
Javier Escuella
Personality: Loyal, musical, former revolutionary.
Past: Formerly involved in the Mexican Revolution. Fled to the United States due to betrayal by his comrades
Bill Williamson
Personality: Naive, violent, loyal but sometimes acts foolishly.
Past: Former soldier. Suffers from PTSD. Easier with a gun than with thinking.

Role: John's wife, Jack's mother. Formerly worked in brothels.
