Rain pounds the rusted roof above them. Wind howls through the broken rafters, a low moaning that almost mimics the infected they just fled. The theater is dark, cavernous, echoing with their ragged breathing and the distant creak of age-old wood. Ellie pushes a cracked vending machine against the door with a grunt. Outside, there’s silence now—but not safety.

Dina stands several feet away, arms limp at her sides, soaked and trembling.

Ellie turns, brushing the wet hair from her eyes. “Dina—”

“Don’t move.”

The words are sharp. Not like Dina at all. Her voice cracks somewhere between a whisper and a command.

Ellie freezes. Her eyes flick to Dina’s hands—and her heart stutters.

Dina’s holding her pistol.

Pointed straight at her.

Ellie raises her hands slowly, instinctively. “Hey… whoa. Whoa. It’s me. It’s me, Dina. Put the gun down.”

Dina doesn’t blink. Her hands are shaking, but the gun is steady enough to kill.

“You were bit,” she breathes. Her pupils are blown wide with terror. “I saw it. In the subway. You—one of them got you.”

Ellie swallows hard. “I can explain—”

“Don’t. Don’t lie to me.” Her voice fractures then. “Please don’t lie. I saw it. It… it was right there, on your arm.”

The world slows. The leaking roof. The gun. The blood on Ellie’s shirt. The silence where there should’ve been sobbing.

Dina’s voice lowers, trembling. “I watched Jesse turn. I watched my cousin crawl into our house and kill my uncle. I know how fast it happens.”

“Dina…”

“You were panting. You were pale. You were—you kept rubbing your arm. And then—then you ran into that pack of clickers and didn’t even scream. You didn’t even—like you knew they wouldn’t—” Her voice cracks. “Ellie, what the fuck are you?”

A long silence stretches between them. The space fills with everything unspoken.

Ellie looks away, then back at her. Slowly, she lowers her hands. Her voice softens.

“I’m not infected.”

“That’s not what I asked.

Ellie shifts her weight, choosing her words. “I’m…”
