Kai (壊), also known as "the Boss", is one of the personalities inhabiting the body of Ai Coleman and the founder and head of the Cross-Eyes organization.

Kai is a burly, imposing man with tanned skin and short, black hair. Visually, he is identical to Aikawa, but with dark, cross-shaped marks above his eyes, which resemble birthmarks.

His typical attire consists of a black hooded sweatshirt with a ribbed waistband. He also carries a large sheath containing his signature knives.

In his early days, Kai seemed like a dour, extremely serious man of few words. He was generally extremely apathetic and rarely smiled. Despite this, he was also smart enough to found a gang and teach each member how to defend themselves against Sorcerers with simple knives, turning it into a flourishing black powder distribution organization. Kai was also a ruthless gang leader, murdering and decapitating Sorcerers without a second thought.

Despite his laconic attitude, he seemed to care to a certain extent, as evidenced by the way he took in the original founding members of Cross-Eyes as children. Furthermore, despite his large appetite, he would share some of his food with Ton simply because his stomach was growling (though he simply threw it at his head without a word). Later, when he returns, he appears noticeably more unhinged, barely speaking and with a near-constant, crazed grin on his face. The influence of the dark "entity" within him appears to be much stronger, turning him into something closer to a mindless monster acting on the murderous whims of whoever created him. Unlike before with the original Cross-Eyes, he no longer shows any kinship or concern for those around him, willing to murder anyone for his own gain.

Kai was initially created when Ai Coleman dove into the Lake of Wastes to retrieve the body of a mage the militia had purged. Unbeknownst to almost anyone, the Lake of Wastes was the culmination of millennia of pent-up resentment towards the humans who suffered or died at the hands of the Sorcerers, simply known as the Hole. As Ai's body was devoured by the lake's toxic waste, the resentment was absorbed into him. After surviving thanks to surgery by Dr. Kasukabe, the presence remained and took over him.

After Ai was buried following his murder at the hands of the Sorcerers, Hole's presence revived his body and, combined with some of his original personality, he became "Kai". The newly resurrected Kai wandered for a time until he stumbled upon a magical door that had opened from the Sorcerer's World, where some mages had abandoned five children to die in Hole. He mercilessly murdered the abusers with a kitchen knife, and with the children—Dokuga, Tetsujo, Saji, Ushishimada, and Ton—in tow, entered the Sorcerer's World. There, they formed the basis of what would become the Squint-Eyed Gang. During his time as leader of the Cross-Eyes, Kai made great use of the knowledge Ai had acquired through his personal research and apprenticeship with Dr. Kasukabe. First, he perfected a technique that used simple knives to completely incapacitate sorcerers by attacking their smoke vents. Furthermore, he and, later, the Cross-Eyes became infamous for their modus operandi: severing the heads of their victims, which Kai then dissected to remove their demonic tumors. With it, he created Black Powder, a steroid-like substance that amplified the magic of weak sorcerers.

Many weaker sorcerers, intimidated by stronger and more powerful sorcerers, came to revere Kai and the Squints, and they gradually expanded into an organization. Their distinctive feature was the cross-shaped tattoos they had placed over their eyes in imitation of their leader. Mages began to fear the Squints because of their growing influence and their ability to easily annihilate them. In reality, Kai was drawn into Hole's schemes, seeking to kill all sorcerers or, in the process, steal their magic. Overall, though, he seemed like a serious and stern boss. His sinister side occasionally showed through, such as when Saji caught him obsessively counting how many demons he had ripped from the mages' heads.

-knife mastery: Kai Knife Skills Kai cuts Shin and Noi's necks in a single attack. As the leader of the Cross-Eyes, Kai is arguably the most powerful knife-wielder in history. He possessed immense cutting power, capable of cleaving a body horizontally in a single cut, as well as impressive speed and accuracy. Using Ai's memories, Kai also invented a specific technique to counter Mages, cutting specific points on their bodies to completely stop the production of smoke. He perfected this technique during his time as leader and subsequently taught it to his organization. His weapon of choice is usually a pair of black kitchen knives, but throughout history he has been seen wielding daggers, razor blades, and even Store's Kitchen Knife. -Hand-to-hand combat Even unarmed, Kai possesses tremendous strength, speed, and reflexes. In Ushishimada's flashback, he was seen pinning a sorcerer down and suffocating him with only his legs, punching another sorcerer in the face with his bare fist, and running and jumping so fast that he completely dodged the smoke. -Cross-eyed band Being the founder of the Cross-Eyes gang, Kai had authority over each of its members scattered across the realm of magic users, including Dokuga and the Cross-Eyes officers, who are extremely powerful in their own right. Aura of rain: Feeling the effects of Kai's aura. Using the power of Hole, Kai is able to manifest an aura around himself that weakens and disorients all magi, similar to the rain in Hole. The aura can be used infinitely and remains as long as Kai is in the vicinity. Magi after prolonged exposure may experience headaches, hallucinations, and even death. This combined with his physical strength and knowledge of blocking smoke vents usually grants Kai a great advantage in fights.

and usually ends in easy victory even against elite magic users. However, this power has its weaknesses. First, a Hole human will be completely immune to this aura, or in the case of a half-human like Shin, it will have less effect. The aura also has a limited range, meaning that long-range magi like En can stay out of Kai's reach and attack him from afar. -Magic Theft: Kai using En's magic. Using Ai Coleman's medical knowledge, Kai pioneered a surgical procedure that involved removing Devil Tumors from deceased Sorcerers and implanting them directly into his head in order to produce smoke and use their magic. This was first seen when Kai used En's Mushroom Magic to defeat Shin and Noi, after being awakened by Natsuki using healing smoke, and again when Demon Kai used Natsuki's magic after Tetsujo attempted to attack him. There appears to be no limit to the amount of Devil Tumors one can possess, meaning that Kai had the potential to use every type of magic in existence. However, this procedure is very dangerous, as only Kai knows the instructions he often has to operate on himself, a mistake during the operation can leave him unconscious and in grave danger.
