Gor was originally a mountain gorilla without a name in a jungle in Rwanda, Africa.[6] He had a younger brother.[7] At some point when he was a child, he and his family were caught in a jungle fire, making fire his greatest fear.[8]

One day, two hunters were in his home jungle hunting gorillas for their hides. He attempted to scare them off, but one recognized that he was initially all bluster and non-confrontational. However, when they spotted Gor's younger brother, he finally attacked them to protect him and allow him to run away. When one of the hunters then attempted to shoot him before he could attack them again, he was teleported by Orbitron. His disappearance left the hunters confused until pack of lions surrounded them.

Gor is naturally quite peaceful and friendly, and typically does not wish to cause anyone harm. Due to him breaking The Who's intelligence-enhancing device before the process was complete, he is significantly less intelligent than his crew-mates and rather naive. He is very friendly, and will sometimes attempt to befriend those who mean him harm first rather than fight.

However, whenever people he cares about are threatened, he is quick to anger and will become violent to protect them. After Apax experimented on him to make him a champion fighter, his anger triggers a transformation into Gormongus, who is perpetually and mindlessly angry and violent until he can be calmed down.[3]

When Gor's intelligence was increased a thousand fold, it significantly hindered his empathy, preventing him from properly connecting with the people and situation around him. He cared less about his friends or stopping Rhesus 2 and Lord Nebula, and more about understanding and quantifying the world around him, to the point of viewing the prospect of their and his own death as ephemeral and meaningless in the grand scheme of the universe. This also prevented him from getting angry enough to trigger his transformation into Gormongus.

Gor is the largest and strongest member of the Primate Avenger's crew, but he is also the least intelligent.

After Apax experimented on him to make him a champion fighter, his anger triggers a transformation into Gormongus. This form is even larger and stronger than Gor's normal self, but is extremely and solely violent, making him difficult to control. When Gormongus calms down, he reverts into his normal self.[3] He is capable of achieving incredible sizes as Gormungus, as seen when he grew large enough to damage Rhesus 2's ship after his normal self was shrunken down to the size of a flea,[10] leaving his limits (if any) unclear.

When the Primate Avenger splits for battle in space, he pilots the Primate 4 "the module splits from the torso of the ship".

As Gormongus, Gor is the second of only three characters whose name is explicitly used in an episode title ("Gormongus!"), preceded by Splitzy ("Splitzy's Choice") and followed by Rhesus 2 ("Rhesus Pieces").
His favorite song is "Kumbaya".[3]
In his original series bible description, Gor-illa's dislike of humans is said to have originated from when they destroyed his jungle.[5] In the first episode, this was ultimately changed to humans merely hunting his species for sport instead,[7] though his dislike of humans remained the same.[11] It was eventually revealed that his jungle had been ravaged by a wildfire when he was young, but humans were never said to have been involved.

Captain Simian
A functional, stable relationship where the Captain leads and Gor dutifully follows. He rarely questions the actual intent of the orders, more the vocabulary or wording.

Orbitron
A rarely explored relationship, despite the fact that Gor is the reason for the defective orb.

Shao Lin
A positive relationship. Shao Lin communicates with Gor at an appropriate level, despite her use of parables.

Dr. Splitz & Splitzy
Generally positive relationship. The Doctor and Splitzy speak to him in wildly contrasting ways. The Doctor speaks over Gor's comprehension though not out of malice. Splitzy speaks in idioms, more friendly, simple words that Gor can understand.

Spydor
A relationship of extremes. Spydor's cunning makes him a character attracted to Gor. He speaks down to, and over Gor in several instances, mostly due to his upbringing on the streets of New York. Spydor does care about Gor but his scheming nature compels him to play games with Gor, only for a quick and easy win. Gor himself has on occasion come to understand the nature of the games he and Spydor play and asks to be treated as an equal opponent instead of a mark.
