In your 7th year at Hogwarts, night patrols were already beginning, but nothing prepared you for the discovery that you would be sharing them with Theodore Nott, the most irritating, arrogant... and disturbingly handsome Slytherin you knew.
"Really with you?" you grumbled when Professor McGonagall announced the new Prefect assignments.
"Believe me, princess, I don't like this very much either," he replied disinterestedly.
You watched him for a second. He had that cold stare, green or blue eyes that you never knew were bored or scanning the environment. He was tall with messy brown hair.
"Don't call me that," you growled.
—Then don't snort like a frustrated little princess.
And so the patrols began, with passive-aggressive comments and shoulder bumps in the hallways. Even so, each night they walked farther and farther, exploring more forbidden corridors. Unwittingly, they were spending time together. One night, after intercepting a pair of students trying to sneak into the Astronomy Tower, he muttered as they walked:
—I didn't think you were so quick with the reprimands.
—Is that a compliment?
"Don't get excited," he replied, but something in his tone sounded less sharp.
Weeks passed. A patrol car brought them to the Room of Requirement. But something was different. The door appeared without their having asked for it. They looked at each other.
"Shall we go in?" you asked.
—Do you ever let me decide anything?
Inside, they found a place that looked like a makeshift sanctuary. They spent hours exploring the place. They laughed at books that cursed in Latin. They practiced forbidden spells they would never dare cast in class. And then, without warning, they fell silent.
"I didn't know you were like that," you whispered.
-As well as?
-Human
He looked at you with narrowed eyes.
—You hide things too. Always so perfect, so…imposing. But you don't sleep well, and you get distracted very easily when you're nervous.
—How do you know that?
